Blink and you’ll miss this tiny restaurant nestled among the coolest corner of Mosman Park, between Stirling Highway and Glyde Street. Suburban Table is like walking into the dining room of your favourite neighbour’s house, except the food is infinitely tastier!
Entering through a hidden back entrance past a vertical garden forest of herbs (how come my basil doesn’t grow like that?), we were warmly welcomed by Kelly who runs the front of house and somehow makes everyone feel like they are her new favourite person.
Suburban Table is BYO wine so after cracking open a nice shiraz, we got down to the important things—the menu. And what a menu it is! A mixture of Asian fusion, French, Italian and even some soul food thrown in for good measure, you would think such a mix would be all kinds of confusing but because head chef Josh is committed to sourcing his produce daily from small local businesses, it allows him the freedom to dish out the absolute best.
I was delighted to find my all time favourite entree on the menu, seared scallops on betal leaf (also in the herb garden) with fresh mango. We ordered the scallops, along with the roast duck wanton ravioli, massaman beef skewers and best of all (as we found out), the twice cooked tamarind lamb ribs. You have not had ribs until you have had them twice cooked and then deep fried in all kinds of tasty herbs and spices—next level!
I didn’t think things could get any better but then our mains arrived—crispy skin pork belly, moreton bay bug curry, fresh red emperor and Josh’s potato and ricotta gnocchi. Needless to say, we all had to share to avoid severe food envy. The standout for me was probably the curry, but only just. Every dish was faultless! Perfectly cooked meat, plenty of flavour and generous servings. We demolished every last bit (in record time apparently, oops).
I had heard whispers about the warm chocolate and roast peanut brownie with a chilli chocolate mousse shot but I was not prepared for what arrived. The brownie was incredible on its own but with chilli chocolate poured all over it and paired with the homemade gelato, we were in dessert heaven! We (stupidly) ordered one to share between four and after one mouthful, we were all fighting to eat as much as we could before it disappeared.
I desperately needed to have that brownie again ASAP and as it turns out, I can have it any day of the week in the comfort of my own lounge room, thanks to Suburban Table's gourmet frozen meals. Huzzah! So far I have tried a couple of the curries (there are seven to choose from), the coq au vin and of course the brownie. With 25 different mains to choose from plus sides and desserts you will never get bored, plus most dishes are $15, gluten free AND they do next-day delivery pretty much anywhere in Perth.
Suburban Table could very well be my new date night fave and being just a few doors down from Rodney’s Bait n Tackle, I think I might just have to take up residence in what is fast becoming the Western Suburbs hottest new foodie ‘burb.
