Mayfair Lane | The Verdict

By Chloe Sputore - 13 Dec 2016

West Perth's got a new pub and dining room and you're going to want to check it out, stat!

Mayfair Lane (in the possie that was once The Brown Fox) swung open its doors in late 2016 and it has brought with it a whole lot of English pub charm and hearty goodness.

The space is separated into a large bar and pub area perfect for after work drinks and a sophisticated dining room that's more suited to intimate date nights and cosy dinners with friends.

We decided we were after a walk on the primo side of life and opted to be seated in the dining room which overlooks the pub, and it did not disappoint. From the minute we sat down we knew we were in for a treat. Everything is quality, from the linen napkins and fancy steak knives, right through to the 23-strong wine list and incredible pimped-up-pub-food menu.

Being a weeknight, a whole bottle of wine was out of the question (you've got to be responsible at some point in your life, eh?), but thanks to some wine-wizardry we were able to order some pretty speccy drops that would normally only be available by the bottle. But how is that possible, you ask? Well, Mayfair Lane owns a pretty crazy device called a Coravin, which allows you to syphon wine from a cork-sealed bottle, leaving the remaining bottled wine uncompromised. Amazing, we're SO getting one!

Now that our thirst was significantly quenched we got down to business on the menu ordering the poached duck egg with chorizo, bacon, fresh pea salad and truffle oil to kick things off. Aside from being a work of art, this dish was delish, the egg was cooked to perfection and thankfully we'd also ordered a side of bread because we weren't letting any of it go to waste! We suggest you do the same.

For mains, it had to be one of Mayfair Lane's amazing steaks and the lamb assiette. We were also strongly advised to order the tomato and red onion salad with honey mustard dressing to cut through the richness of our mains—it was the perfect accompaniment!

The steak was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy. Served with Madeira mushroom ragout, chips and a red wine jus—we devoured the entire thing. But the highlight of the evening had to be the Lamb Assiette, which we were told is Richard Branson's favourite dish (what good taste we have). It's basically lamb three ways—shepherd's pie, slow cooked lamb shoulder served with spinach puree and a rack of lamb served with roast garlic and a white wine and rosemary jus. There was so much pleasure groaning going on while we ate this dish!

Thanks to all of the meaty deliciousness, dessert was out of the question, but we'll be back very soon to try the rocky road parfait with shortbread and chocolate sauce!

For their opening hours, location and more, you'll find Mayfair Lane in The Directory.
