A Big, Thai Affair

By Jacqui Thompson - 27 Jun 2013

Muum Maam Thai restaurant, on Holt Street, Surry Hills, is the perfect spot for a big group dinner. With long, banquet-style wooden tables, and a menu that caters for vegetarian and gluten-free diets, everyone will be satisfied.

Muum Maam is named after the Thai slang for 'little gluten', it is apt, as after consuming a meal in this establishment, that is exactly what one feels like. Self-control is difficult in this place. With a focus on authentic Thai flavours, and the use of seasonal produce, the cuisine is very tasty—but quite rich.

Starters well worth tucking into include: the Betel leaf topped with smoked trout, trout roe, sweet coconut, lime, ginger?and tamarind; the fried prawn and pork cakes in coconut, with house vinegar and plum sauce; and the grilled chicken skewers with peanut sauce.

There are many flavoursome mains to choose from, a suggested combination includes: the shredded banana blossom salad, with prawns, cashews, coriander, and sweet chilli; the salt and pepper cuttlefish with sweet chilli sauce; the Massaman coconut curry of veal ossobucco and potato; and finally, the crispy pork belly, wok-fried, with Chinese broccoli in oyster sauce.

For those working locally in Surry Hills, Muum Maam run the lunchtime Tuk Shop during the hours of 11:30pm to 3pm, Monday to Friday. There are lighter options on the lunchtime menu and it is a well-priced list.
