5 Coffee Spots You Didn't Know About

By Brooke Darling - 26 Feb 2016

Now, let’s get one thing straight. We are not claiming that these coffee joints are total secrets, as it’s likely those peeps who live or work in these suburbs have already stumbled across these little gems and are lucky enough to call them their local.

But, for the rest of us who like to mix it up, if it means tasting some new beans in funky new surrounds, with the possibility of some babe baristas as eye candy while you lounge… well, we’re all for venturing outside the reg’.

Spice up your week by seeking out one of these wee pots of gold, pouring some of the best coffee on the Gold Coast.

Percy’s Corner

Southport regulars will claim that Percy’s Corner serves up some of the best coffee on the Gold Coast, and who are we to argue? And while this coffee joint is hardly a secret to locals in the area, it gives southern coffee haunts a run for their money. Housed inside a beautifully-restored 1920s ambulance station (which is also home to the kick-arse Co Spaces, if you’re a start-up looking for a new workspace), Percy’s is totally worth the drive especially when part of an epic eating and drinking itinerary in the north.

Where: 45 Nerang Street, Southport CBD

Journeymen Coffee Roasters

We call this district home, yet it took a Metropolist reader (thanks mate!) to point us in the direction of this tucked away gem in Miami. Hailing from the holy-grail Melbourne coffee scene, mid-last year the trio behind Journeymen started small batch roasting, opening an adjoining barista bar that’s since been keeping a dedicated stream of regulars caffeinated with their smooth brews—worth hunting down next time you’re in the area!

Where: 3/38 Pacific Avenue, Miami

Nord Coffee Co.

Folks, you’re going to want to remember Nord… ‘cause it’s a bean brand you’ll soon be seeing everywhere. Hidden away in the industrial zone of Mermaid Waters, espresso bar Nord Coffee Co. is extra spesh given they roast their own beans in-house. Servicing mid-week workers in this urban area and a distribution point for their burgeoning wholesale business, you’ll need to pop in before 2pm weekdays to sip on their brews and admire the edgy wood fit-out. With 6,500 dowel pieces forming a wave across the roof and walls, this Scandi-inspired design was a collab with creative neighbours, Studio Workshop. Check ‘em out!

Where: 1/5 Northview Street, Mermaid Waters

ShakerMaker Coffee Drive-thru

There’s no stopping the Blackboard Coffee bean domination that’s currently sweeping the city. This Gold Coast-based success story has recently teamed up with yet another venture, this time in the form of a nifty drive-thru coffee bar, ShakerMaker. Try it, if just for the novelty factor—it’s like the convenience of a drive-thru bottle-o yet feeds your morning caffeine addiction. Start the day right with hot or cold brews, together with Blackboard’s legendary doughnuts and injectables or toasties on Panya Artisan Bakery sourdough. Delish!

Where: 117a Arundel Drive, Arundel

Hide ‘n’ Seek Espresso

It’s all in the name for Hide ‘n’ Seek Espresso. They’ve been around for two years now, but their out-of-the-way location in the ‘burbs has certainly kept them off the radar; except for their in-the-know local clientele, that is. Their regulars will tell you the coffee and service hasn’t faulted since they’ve opened; serving Toby’s Estate beans, cold drip for those scorching mornings, and sweet goodies out of the cabinet, we think you’ll love them just as much as we do.

Where: Shop 2/110 Mountain View Avenue, Miami
