Gold Coast Music Awards Bigger And Brighter In 2017

Chests across the Gold Coast puffed up with pride last Thursday when our very own starlet went neck and neck with one of world’s finest DJs and producers, Flume; to take number two spot on the worshipped Triple J Hottest 100.

What makes it even more extraordinary, it was Amy Shark’s debut year on the national scene as a coveted Unearthed artist. A few years prior, Amy had almost all but given up on a career in music. Yet the wider local music community believed this gutsy 30-year-old from Broadbeach Waters was destined for success having supported her at small gigs and appearances in recent times.

Those with their finger on the pulse already know the Gold Coast is not all beaches, tanned bods, brunchin’ and rooftop cocktails. The music scene here is flourishing thanks to a creative and nurturing local network and culture advocates like Blank GC. Come weekends, you only need to hang around any day or night market or intimate live music venue to see the breadth of talent right here in our backyard. It’s a beautiful thing!

Now entering its third year, the Gold Coast Music Awards are simply exploding in size and opportunity for exposure. After last year’s seriously fun yet intimate industry party at Burleigh Brewing HQ, 2017’s awards will now coincide with the start of the Surfers Paradise LIVE! Festival. What’s more, this new beachfront location and key partnership with Surfers Paradise Alliance is allowing organisers to add a free open-to-the-public live component to the awards night, with the awards live-streamed and top local musical acts performing on a large-scale stage—just for you guys!

Though back to right now, we’re helping spread word that nominations for the 2017 Gold Coast Music Awards (GCMA) are officially OPEN! So while you probably shouldn’t physically nominate your friend or fave artist (there are some important forms that need to be filled, obvs), make sure you push them gently in the back and give ‘em the encouragement they need to put their name forward. Recent GCMA category changes, including Breakout Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and People’s Choice Award are hoped to entice more rising stars to step up for the chance to be recognised among their peers.

GCMA independent judging panel is loaded with industry experts, including Woodford Folk Festival program director, Chloe Goodyear and music journalist, Trevor Jackson. Winners will walk away with access to paid performance opps, invaluable industry exposure, media packages, and a cool trophy by SWELL sculpture artist Dion Parker. Yep, Amy Shark was a finalist last year at this very event.

Just love music and supporting local? Mark Thursday, April 27 in your diary, ‘cause you’re invited to attend a free open-air show in Surfers Paradise celebrating all things home-grown music or, better yet, purchase tickets to the VIP marquee and awards ceremony.

The GCMA are followed closely by Surfers Paradise LIVE!—one of the Coast’s largest free music events—held on the Surfers Paradise foreshore between April 28-30. Headlined by Aussie darlings, The Veronicas and more big acts to be announced soon. Summer might be two thirds over folks, but autumn on the Gold Coast is loaded with good stuff.

Details: Nominations for the GCMA are now open and close March 10.
