Love The Gold Coast? Have We Got The Job For You!

There’s no denying we’re living through a revolutionary era of the share economy.

From sharing your ride with Uber to opening your home or spare room via Airbnb; our world is a different place than it was five years ago.

At the same rate, our dear Gold Coast is shaking the stigma that we are all theme parks, boozy nightclubs, wax museums, and Aqua Ducks—TF!

We want visitors to our region to walk away with authentic, heart-filling holiday memories. To share stories of hanging with the locals at their favourite beaches, discovering neighbourhood cafe nooks, off-the-beaten track hinterland adventures, dining gems hidden in the ‘burbs, one-of-a-kind day trips with new friends, rubbing shoulders with the locals at a vibing Sunday picnic, and organic experiences that money can’t buy. Until now.

While a similar concept already exists in other parts of the world, Localyokl is new to Australia and was born RIGHT HERE, on the Gold Coast. The local tour guide program is set to launch in March and while they have dozens on GC-based guides and tailored experiences on the books already, they want to engage at least 100 Gold Coasters in the coming weeks—that’s you guys!

These days, savvy travellers are seeking “live like a local” experiences, and giving one-size-fits-all tours the flick.

Imagine travelling to a new place and being able to book a private or semi-private tour with someone like-minded who lives and breathes a destination and shares your interests. Maybe they’ll whisk you away on a half-day adventure hitting their fave surfing spots, a walking tour of all the best photography vantage points with some hot shooting tips thrown in, an intimate hinterland expedition to chase waterfalls and stop at cute cafes and country pubs along the way, or a cruisy daytrip to explore the delights of somewhere like Bangalow or Byron.

These days, savvy travellers are seeking “live like a local” experiences, and giving one-size-fits-all tours the flick.

What about being welcomed into a local’s luxe beachside home before heading to the fishing trawlers, buying a swag of fresh seafood that you cook together and then enjoy in the company of your host new friends on their sprawling deck overlooking the ocean? These are just a few of the personally-escorted experiences already on the books. Hell, we live here and we’d totally wanna join some of these tours!

Picture turning your favourite hobby into a casual or even full-time income. Perhaps you can hit up the local farmers’ market before building an epic cheese board together and spending the afternoon picnicking with your guests on Burleigh Hill. What about the tight buns you’ll gain after guiding a weekly sunrise hike up Mount Warning? Or be rewarded for acting as the friendly designated driver while taking your guests on a brewery or bar hopping tour. Know another language? Chances are you’ll be a hot commodity.

You set the (reasonable) price, taking your overheads into consideration, and your unique tour offering is sold via the website on the days you’re available to work. A 15 per cent commission is taken by Localyokl, but you’ll ultimately get paid to do what you love while sharing your passion, your knowledge, your HOME, with others.

Just like similar share economy concepts, Localyokl will work on a rating and review format, so the more awesome you are at hosting, the more work that’s likely to come your way. #hostwiththemost

And while there’s probably some legal mumbo jumbo and hoops you’ve gotta jump through to make sure everything is legit—you’re taking other individuals under your wing, after all—it’ll all be worth it if it means turning doing what you love into cold hard cash.

Not to mention all the cool peeps you’ll meet from around the world. Really connect with one of your guests? There’s nothing stopping you from staying in touch and calling on their expertise next time you’re abroad and in their neck of the woods!

What skills, hobbies, or favourite pockets of the Coast and surrounds would you share? We reckon this idea is pretty freakin’ neat, folks. Intrigued? Jump on the website now to lodge your tour idea and interest as one of the first ever Localyokl guides and be part of a Gold Coast start-up concept that could quite possibly break the big time.
