The bustling foodie hub of Burleigh Heads has caught the attention of some seriously successful out-of-towners—who wouldn’t want to rub shoulders with the likes of Iku Yakitori and Lockwood?—with Sydney chef Alex Munoz Labart to open his first restaurant in the neighbourhood this July.
Alex, who is opening Restaurant Labart with his wife Karla, founder of hospitality communications company The Exchange Agency, has an impressive resume behind him, previously working as the Head Chef at top Sydney restaurants Cirrus Dining and Monopole. Both restaurants were awarded two Chef’s Hats by the Good Food Guide under his leadership, so we know we’re in for a treat now he’s finally at the helm.
Bringing a touch of the Sydney dining scene to the Coast, Alex says the restaurant hopes to promote sustainability and seasonality, while a simple, pared back menu encourages diners to interact closely with their servers—but more on the food deets later.
The 60-seat restaurant will feature an open kitchen and charcoal grill with dishes to be served on bespoke tableware by much-loved local ceramicist, Marloe Marloe. With polished concrete floors and walnut tones, Restaurant Labart, located on Burleigh’s West Street, will be the warm yet urban cool space we’ve been waiting for. AKA—the perfect winter dining spot.
While the exact details of dishes on offer remain hush hush, the menu will be divided into snacks, small and large plates which allows diners to share dishes or tuck into something more robust all by themselves—no judgment here! There’s also plans for a six-course set menu which will change depending on what local and seasonal produce is on offer.
But what about the booze, we hear you shouting? Don’t worry, Team Munoz Labart knows us Gold Coasters love a good tipple or 10 with our meals. There will be a selection of Aussie craft beers and seasonal cocktails available, as well as both local and international wines. And to further prove they know their market, Karla, who grew up on the Gold Coast, has even convinced husband Alex to serve a glass of Savvy B with ice on the side, just like us locals. Don’t lie, we know you do it too!
While we’ve never been one to wish for winter to come sooner, the opening of Restaurant Labart means we’re no longer dreading July. We’ll be back soon with your first tasty look inside. In the meantime stay up to date via their Instagram @restaurantlabart.
