Everybody loves a bargain, and our great state has a ton of hidden shops full of treasure (or trash) ready to discover. We’ve scoured the good, the bad and the dusty so you don’t have to!
Gumtree just isn’t cutting it and need to furnish your share house without spending a year’s worth of drinking money? This Salvos store has all your furniture needs sorted–chest of drawers, coffee tables and couches with cash still left in your pocket. They do sell clothes and knick-knacks, but honestly, they’re nothing to write home about.
This Williamstown Salvos store is the mecca of all Salvos stores! It spans two factory units, so eat a big breaky and prepare to get lost in a treasure trove of pre-loved goodies. Although you can find just about anything here, you’ll come for the furniture, and with weekly specials and deals, you’ll be able to furnish your entire house with none of the big spend guilt.
Sacred Heart Mission
This Chapel Street gem has gained somewhat of a rep within the area and throughout the greater Melbourne area for its fantastic selection of quality second-hand furniture. Taking up two shop fronts, this op shop is enormous and the relatively affluent surrounding suburbs of Prahran, South Yarra and Toorak make for some great donations of pre-loved goods. You’ll find everything from desks and cabinets to couches and even whitegoods!
City Basement Books
Although not strictly an op shop, this one is still worth a mention. City Basement Books is a book worm's haven! The guys offer an extensive range of quality second-hand books covering all genres and topics. We can guarantee you’ll go in for one obscure book you couldn’t find in Dymocks and leave with a year’s worth of reading material.
Although City Basement Book might be the holy grail of second-hand bookstores, our fav op shops around the city also sell a selection of pre-loved reads.
Savers Recycle Superstore
With a massive warehouse filled with endless aisles of clothes, you’ll need to have your game face on to tackle this beast. You’ll come out of a day’s shopping with a bagful of new threads and RSI, but all totally worth it!
St Matthews Op Shops
It’s worth the long hike, trust us! St Matthews has been nominated as one of Victoria’s best op shops for designer and vintage clothing. There’s no need to comb through the racks either because the amazing staff and volunteers have created a separate rack for vintage and designer clothing – talk about service!
Sacred Heart Mission
A Lamborghini showroom in its former life, the glamour continues at Sacred Heart Mission’s South Melbourne op shop. Renowned for receiving regular donations of second-hand designer clothes, you’ll have to be quick because these bargains are snapped up almost as quickly as they’re put on the racks!
The Epilepsy Foundation
Only opened this year, The Epilepsy Foundation Op Shop helps individuals and families impacted by epilepsy and seizures. The store is beautifully presented and full of retro chic outfits at very reasonable prices.
