While pizza has been off limits for Lupo’s signature wood-fired oven, co-owner Harry Pearce and his family are putting the #nofuckingpizza mantra aside for one night; making a special exception for a cause that’s close to their hearts.
Growing up in the hospitality industry, Harry knows all too well the stresses involved in this exciting yet unforgiving business. The difference being, he’s spent the past few years working closely with family, who’ve managed to keep each other on track when the times got tough. Harry also knows that not everyone is as fortunate to have such an incredible and immediate support network in their lives.
There’s no denying hospitality can be a merciless industry for both owners and workers; given the long hours and relentless demands of servicing the public; where the ‘work hard, play hard’ mindset can take its toll.
So, like the humble legends they are, they’re doing their bit to bring mental and physical health within the hospitality industry to the forefront, starting with a feel-good pizza party at Lupo on Monday 28 May.
Profits from the evening will be donated to mental health charity, R U OK, with the team also in the midst of launching a website called ‘Head First’. They hope the online platform will give the local hospitality crew a place where they can rise up and support each other, and share both positive and negative experiences through stories, podcasts, artwork and relevant articles.
As Harry explains, “Within all things that stem from the hospitality and service industry can come a lot of stress; physical, mental, social and financial stresses can sometimes get a little overwhelming. Hopefully get-togethers like this party and platforms like the website can help promote an industry where people feel a little more together and part of a community in a positive way.”
Kicking off at 5pm next Monday 28 May, we expect they’ll pull a jovial crowd of both loyal hospitality friends and others sitting on the outskirts; welcoming all in with open arms for a banter over Coopers beer specials and four delicious wood-fired pizza flavours. DJ Passion Fingers will be bringing the party tunes and a good ol’ fashioned hospitality night, with a cause, is anticipated.
Honestly though, if we didn’t love this team enough already…
While we’re on the topic of one of our favourite Gold Coast restaurants, Lupo has some exciting additions in the works for new and old clientele. Including a monthly dinner series (starting Tuesday 26 June) focusing on a different cuisine with the first being (wait for it!) Chinese food using local ingredients combined with Chinese techniques and flavours that they love eating themselves. Honestly, is there anything this family cannot do? We doubt it.
In addition, they’ve also got plans to make ‘Lupo’s Deli’ available on UberEats where you can order your picnicking and hosting essentials like cured meats, cheeses and fresh baguettes plus Lupo’s homemade small goods including pates, terrines, fermented chillis and more. We’ll be keeping an eye out for that one!
