Catch the better half of Varsity Lakes’ Winterfest this August; spanning the end of July and lasting through until August 6, if you haven’t checked out Winterfest yet, now is your chance. Jam-packed with community spirit, music, theatre, film, food, comedy and skating, there’s a little something for everyone.

Let Go ‘N’ Glow
This electrifying glow-in-the-dark yoga party, brought to you by Lululemon in association with Essence of Living and held at Miami Marketta, is all about letting go and flowin’ with your body. How totally Zen to chill in the dark with your mates, covered in luminescent body paint and, of course, strategically placed glowing hand prints to show off your assets. Kicking off at 6:30pm, head down 15 minutes early for a few treats before you get to work both on and off the mat.

Australian Longboard Titles
Beginning the month with a splash, the Australian Longboard Titles start paddling on August 2, just across the border on the Tweed Coast. Why not laze in the sun and watch the competition with a couple of seaside thirst quenchers and the winter sun on your face. Followed shortly by the Australian Bodyboarding Titles (August 10 to 14), these championship showdowns are set to be like, totally gnarly, bro.

Raw Gold Coast's NEXT
This showstopper only comes around four times a year and, guess what? August is privy to another exclusive instalment. Spotlighting underground indie talent, Raw Gold Coast’s NEXT event will include fashion by local creatives, performing art pieces, crowd swaying tunes, makeup masters, accessory gurus, hair stylists, photographers and a whole gallery of visual arts. Whip out your old turtleneck, beret and mysterious sunglasses before heading to this Southport night of excellence.

Burleigh BBQ Championships
Burleigh’s annual cook up will be held over two big days, with 50 of Australia’s best BBQ teams battling it out for the ultimate honour at Burleigh’s BBQ Championships. Everything is at steak (see what we did there?) as the pros sweat, sizzle and slow cook over five categories. Chicken, lamb, pork, ribs, beef and seafood will be thrown on the barbie to the delight of 50 lucky judges who will make the final call. Expect market stalls, a pit yard, BBQ equipment, entertainment from local musos and a variety of food truck eats. Be inspired by these expert smokers, however attend with a warning: every sausage sanga you’ve ever eaten will be put to shame after a rendezvous at one of the tastiest things to do on the Gold Coast this August.

Paws In The Park
Treat your pooch with a day trip to Mudgeeraba’s Paws In The Park pet expo. With over 70 local and national stalls, tongues are set to be wagging right across the grassy fields. Expect stalls, talks, demonstrations, ample parking and, of course, puppaccinos, plus you can even make matching flower crowns for you and your fave furry friend. Or, why not get active with some Doga—that’s yoga for you and your dog. The cuteness is just too much!

Titans Vs Broncos At CBus Stadium
Start stretching your Queensland spirit guys, because these two local teams are going head to head for the Titans vs Broncos match at CBus Stadium. There’s nothing wrong with a little healthy competition; like, we’re already continuously competing with Brissy, right? We think they have too many buildings and confusing roads, they think we just get spray tans and eat smashed avo. So we’re naming this the decider to end all qualms and finally put a title on who is the king of southeast Queensland. Obvs us.

Gold Coast Multicultural Festival
Broadbeach Parklands will soon be transformed for the Gold Coast Multicultural Festival. Clearly one of the most cultural things to do on the Gold Coast this August, international acts from 35 nations will take to three festival stages for live performances that are sure to make you feel serious wanderlust. With all of the foods from all of the places, prepare for an all-day graze and take your taste buds on a journey from the fresh Mediterranean options of Greece to hearty classics from Germany, moving next to delicious creations from Istanbul and the carby heaven of Rome. Your entry to the event will cost you a grand total of zero, so catch the G Link down and celebrate the Coast’s diversity with locals, tourists and basically anyone who can never decide what to eat.

Fear & Loathing In Las Vegas At Mo’s Moviehouse
We’ve been as intrigued as the next person to check out what’s going down inside this gritty creative warehouse in the backstreets of Burleigh. Mo’s Desert Clubhouse is a new home base for Gold Coast’s Beats Cartel and their extended family of local musicians, artists and industry crew. To get a taste of what they’re all about, go check out Mo’s first movie night featuring the classic flick, Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas. They’ve got a bunch of events happening this August, including a LIVIN fundraiser on Sunday 6 August, so jump over to their Insta page and give ‘em a thumbs up to stay in the loop.

Throw your shakas in the air; it’s time for Shakafest at Miami Shark Bar. Combining the perfect concoction of street, skate and music, jig to epic headliners Grinspoon, their mates DZ Deathrays, the notoriously cool Butterfingers and a whole bunch more. Held over two stages, you’ll want to pick up your tickets soon because this one’s already almost sold out.

Top Dog Film Festival
Debuting their Australian tour, the Top Dog Film Festival presents a two-hour cinematic celebration of our unanimous love for canine companions. Combining eight inspirational, entertaining and insightful short films about the power of pups in our lives and, of course, the definition of unconditional love. You’ll be sobbing with joy and ugly crying all the way to your next puppy play date after a trip to this pooch lover’s film fest.

Amy Shark Live At Marketta
As part of her ‘Night Thinker’ Australian tour, our gal Amy Shark will be playing at Miami Marketta on August 24. Grab a bite to eat from a variety of local vendors and boogie the night away with The Shark herself and support act Fractures, then just keep swimming back and forth from Marketta’s decadent wine bar. Hurry though, tickets are almost sold out.

Gold Coast Festival Of Lights
Gold Coast’s answer to Sydney’s Vivid and splashed across Broadwater Parklands for five weeks, is an illuminated celebration of Chinese culture in the form of 100 or so various light installations. Gold Coast Festival Of Lights springs to life each night come sundown and will be smattered with cultural performances, traditional handicraft displays and Chinese street food stalls. Cameras at the ready, peeps!

Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Open Day
Did you hear? The Currumbin Wildlife Hospital is having an open day this August, where you'll get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at local vets and nurses in action; plus demonstrations, activities and live music. Every ticket sold will go towards planting more eucalyptus trees in the plantation and we all owe Blinky a little something in return for his years of tree hugging on our behalf, so get to it!
