It’s official, we’re two thirds of the way through winter. Hurrah! Not that we can really complain, when our Gold Coast winter uniform still allows us to rock thongs and shorts on the daily. 

While we’re not done with those chilly mornings and nights just yet, banish any lingering winter blues thanks to a bunch of cracking events for you and your pals to hit up this month. Live music, craft beer fests and an epic Color Run are all happening, plus a bunch of other cool stuff—so, get your diaries ready, here are the best things to do on the Gold Coast this August.

GLOW Light Festival At HOTA

Add some magic to your winter with GLOW’s totally lit light festival. Returning this month, HOTA will transform into a twinkling wonderland for this unmissable three-night festival. Kicking off on August 1, the gardens will be adorned with enchanting installations, live performances and, of course, culinary delights. With this year’s theme ‘Creatures and Colours of the Night’, expect a recreation of the Northern Lights, glowing white horses and light explosions. Grab your jumper and your friends; GLOW is a top pick among the best things to do on the Gold Coast this August.

Byron Writers Festival

Bookworms and writers rejoice; there is a literal smorgasbord of talented authors and industry folk descending on Byron for you to rub shoulders with at the 2019 Byron Writers Festival. For three action-packed days, you can find out what makes your fave novelists and journalists tick in a beautiful beachside surrounding. As well as international writers like A C Grayling and Gianrico Carofiglio, there’s a load of awesome Aussie authors hosting thought-provoking talks and workshops.  

When: Friday 2 to Sunday 4 August

Burleigh Barbecue Championships

Burleigh’s annual Barbecue Championships (AKA the meatiest festival on the Gold Coast) is hitting your August events calendar. Follow the wafting smells, when the parklands adjacent to North Burleigh Surf Club are converted into one huge barbecue pit; hosting cook offs, equipment demos and as much American low and slow barbecue as you can muster. Food trucks and stalls will be feeding the salivating crowds, while the cook-off competition meats are reserved for 50 lucky judges who will determine Gold Coast’s BBQ kings and queens of 2019.

Mavis’ And The Magical Theatre Winter Market

Amid the magical grounds of Mavis’ Kitchen and Cabins is where you’ll find one of the finest events happening this August. At the third seasonal market of the year, celebrating the local growers and producers, expect a warm community atmosphere as you wander market stalls selling freshly harvested goods, plus art, pottery and tasty things to eat and drink. Bring the kidlets to explore the Magical Theatre’s Imagination Playground, and then throw down your picnic rug and let the live music feed your soul. Those good vibes come for free.

Japanese Craft Beer And Gyoza Night At Harajuku Gyoza 

Two of our favourite things are colliding for one deliciously refreshing night this August. Brewed in-house on Harajuku’s own micro-brewery system, and with all gyoza meticulously crafted by hand, there will be a lot of loved poured into the tasty morsels that slide down your throat at this certain-to-sell-out event.  Join head Yoyogi brewer Matt Glanville and Executive Chef Matt Fosker for a fun night filled with plenty of YUM.

O’Heart Festival

This three-day grassroots festival is deeply rooted in environmental awareness, sustainability, wellness and awesome live music. Taking place in the seriously adorable Northern NSW village of Tyalgum, the O’Heart Festival consists of yoga workshops, movement and breathing workshops, environmental awareness talks, markets, arts demonstrations, music and outdoor films. This year coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Woodstock, the not-for-profit event is solar powered with a zero-waste aim. In short, it’s an all-around feel-good festival.

The Color Run Love Tour

If you’re looking for proof that exercise can actually be fun, then we’ve found it. The Color Run is dubbed the happiest 5km on the planet, and for good reason. During the course, you’ll be doused head-to-toe in different colour combos (along with bubbles and foam), which naturally makes for the most epic Insta pics. With no winners or official times, The Color Run is open to all ages and abilities and is one of the best things to do on the Gold Coast this August.

Paws At The Park

Dog lovers unite! Paws At The Park—a whole market dedicated to your fave four-legged friends—is returning to the Gold Coast to melt your heart and give you all of the warm and fuzzies. Now in its fourth year, Mudgeeraba Showgrounds will transform into a total puppy paradise with over 10,000 attendees and 100+ stalls showcasing must-have dog and pet products, plus demos and talks, dog yoga, doggie competitions, food trucks and an off-leash play area so you can cuddle and stay all day.

Etsu Presents An Evening Of Whisky And Wagyu 

Gold Coast’s favourite haunt for next-level Japanese food in a roaring social setting has and always will be, Etsu Izakaya. This August, they’ll welcome Nikka brand ambassador Kevin Griffin into the fold to host a night filled with Japanese whiskies (you’ll get to sample six of Nikka’s finest), perfectly paired with six dishes, including several featuring premium Tajima Wagyu. Food lovers, you don’t want to miss a seat at this table.

The Pink Flamingo Spiegelclub Grand Opening Season

The curtain is ready to drop, with the grand reveal of The Pink Flamingo Spiegelclub. Stone & Wood’s Backyard Invitational 

Stone & Wood’s Backyard Invitational Gold Coast will see local stars Balter, Black Hops and Burleigh Brewing joined by over 20 invited breweries, distilleries and a local kombucha company. Taking over the Surfstitch warehouse in Burleigh, brewers will showcase their products and chinwag with novice and die-hard drinkers via a beer hall of tasting stands, together with masterclasses and industry talks, live music and food trucks. This all-inclusive beer festival and charity fundraiser will be open to the public across two sessions.

Hellenika Long Lunch At Miami Marketta

Simon Gloftis and the team are back at it this August with the winter edition of their hugely popular long lunch soiree. Taking over Miami Marketta’s laneway, act swiftly to secure your table where you’ll be treated to a Greek-charged feast including many Hellenika favourites, plus plenty of refreshing tipples to boot.

As we wave goodbye to chillier nights, what better way to celebrate the slightly warmer weather than at an epic outdoor flick? This August, the good folk at Burleigh Brewing Co. are back with their outdoor cinema and they’re inviting all of you along—for free. Hosted in conjunction with Gold Coast Film Festival and toasting the glorious 90s, this month grab a frosty local brew (or two) and watch In God’s Hands on the outdoor projector.
