Give yourselves a big old high five! Why? Because you’re officially two thirds of the way through winter. Not that we can really complain here on the Coast when your winter uniform still allows you to rock thongs and shorts on the regular. And yet we’re still proud of you. We’re not exactly done with those chilly mornings and nights just yet but to banish those lingering winter blues we’ve rounded up a bunch of cracking events for you and your pals to hit up this month.

Live music, food fests and an epic colour run are all happening, plus a bunch of other cool stuff—you little ripper!

So, here it is, the best things to do on the Gold Coast this August.

VOYAGE Exhibition At Left Bank Gallery

If you, like us, fancy yourself a bit of a culture buff, or at the very least just appreciate a nice piece of art, then head over to Left Bank Gallery for their latest stellar exhibit. Running for the month of August, VOYAGE showcases the work of uber-talented award-winning artists Lara Scolari and Amica Whincop and their love of the ocean and surrounding nature.

First Fridays At Hotel Miami

Talented AF artists, musicians and DJs strutting their stuff at the southern end's favourite coworking space, Hotel Miami? Yas, please! This month the good folk at Hotel Miami are showcasing ‘In Bloom’, featuring the work of Ella Fitzgerald and Kelly Robinson with a floral installation by Carly Jackson Floristry. It will be focusing on the artistry of the female form and its connection with nature, explored through the medium of photography and fine art. There will be multiple interactive installations alongside the artwork including a flower tunnel, life drawing session, and an art wall with materials for audience members to contribute their own artistic flair. Sah cute! Latin American food truck Little Wahaca and the gang from Young Henry’s will also be there to keep you fed and watered.

When: Friday 2 August; 6pm until 10pm

2018 Byron Writers Festival

Bookworms rejoice, there’s a literal (see what we did there?) smorgasbord of talented AF authors for you to rub shoulders with at The Byron Bay Writers Festival. For three action-packed days you can find out what makes your fave novelist tick in beautiful beachside surroundings. As well as international writers like Hannah Richell and Matt Haig, there’s a load of awesome Aussie authors attending including the so-hot-right-now Liane Moriarty of Big Little Lies and crime queen Candice Fox. 

When: Friday 3 to Sunday 5 August; all day long

Varsity Winterfest 2018

Throw on your winter woollies, grab the fam and enjoy this super cute festival. From 3pm there will be street art, live music, dancing, jumping castles for the little ones and of course glorious food. At 6pm the party heads lakeside, so grab a patch of grass, snuggle your loved ones and enjoy a performance by the Gold Coast Philharmonic Orchestra followed by an awesome fireworks display. 

When: Saturday 4 August; 3pm till 7:45pm

Marketta Keg Party—A Festival Of Craft Beer

Can we just take a second to appreciate how bloody good beer is? There’s just something about that golden amber liquid that makes us do a little happy dance from the moment it touches our lips. If you agree with us then you need to head to Miami Marketta’s Keg Party. The boozefest will feature tipples from Green Beacon and Balter, to Black Hops, Lost Palms, Burleigh Brewing and 4 Pines. And of course, they’ve got you covered with loads of moreish tucker on offer. It’ll be a frothin’ good time.

Nobby’s Winter Sundayz Session

Forget spending your Sunday arvo at home meal prepping for the coming work week (life is too short to eat the same meal five days straight tbh), head to Nobby’s Winter Sundayz Session instead. Sip on ice cold beers from local craft breweries like Stone and Wood, Balter and Burleigh Brewing. Stuff your face with delish noms from food trucks Weiner Haus, Food Kartel, Whips & Co and Brazza BBQ. Then bliss out in the sunshine while listening to sweet live music from Felicity Lawless and The Milkmen. It’s one for the whole fam bam too with kiddies entertainment in the park.

GLOW At HOTA, Home Of The Arts

Add some magic to your winter with GLOW’s totally lit light festival. HOTA, Home of the Arts will transform into a twinkling wonderland for the unmissable three-night festival. Kicking off on 9 August, the gardens will be adorned with enchanting installations, live performances and—of course—culinary delights. Expect laser beams, neon dogs, light explosions and a decent dose of magic!

When: Thursday 9 to Saturday 11 August; 5pm till 9pm.

Meet The Maker

Winos will love this one. Taking place at the QT hotel you and your vino-loving pals can get up close and personal with the gang from Mount Langi Ghiran Estate in Ballarat. While chatting all things of the grape variety you can enjoy a mouth-watering feast from the Bazaar—we’re talking non-stop freshly shucked oysters for starters guys!

Bangalow BBQ & Bluegrass Festival

With sweet tunes and delish noms, the Bangalow BBQ & Bluegrass Festival is perfect for music lovers. There’s a variety show, loads of concerts and the always popular BBQ comp that will be sure to deliver some finger lickin’ good food. Even better, the not for profit event is raising funds for local arts and culture. It’s all about the good vibes people.

O’Heart Festival

This three-day indie folk festival is deeply rooted in environmental awareness, wellness and awesome live music. Living up to its name, the O’Heart Festival is all about living with compassion, love and inclusiveness. Taking place in the seriously adorable Northern NSW village of Tyalgum, the weekend consists of yoga workshops, movement and singing workshops, environmental awareness talks, markets, music and films. The not-for-profit event is solar powered with a zero-waste aim. In short, it’s an all-around feel-good festival.

Cooking Demonstrations With Georgia Barnes

We don’t know about you guys but sometimes we need a little extra inspo when we step into the kitchen. Enter Masterchef alumni and nutritionist Georgia Barnes and her uber helpful masterclasses. Held every month until the end of the year, you’ll learn new tips and tricks in the kitchen, be inspired with new recipes, get to taste Georgia’s delish food and AND there’s a goodie bag. Win! This month’s masterclass, which with only 10 people is super intimate, is called The Best Of Breakfast and is all about perfecting pancakes and poached eggs. YUM!

The Color Run

If you’re looking for proof that exercise can actually be fun then we’ve found it. The Color Run is dubbed the happiest 5km on the planet and for good reason. During the course, you’ll be doused head to toe in different colour combos. Trust us, we’ve done this and it makes for the most epic Insta pics. With no winners or official times, it’s open to all ages and abilities.

Outdoor Cinema At Burleigh Brewing Co.

Not content with simply serving up some of the Coast’s most epic brews, GC fave, Burleigh Brewing Co. is back with their outdoor cinema. That’s right people, beers and blockbusters all under the night sky #winning. So throw back some of their ice-cold brews, a bucket of popcorn and relax in their deck chairs while wetting your pants over hilarious flick Tropic Thunder. Sounds like the perfect Thursday to us!

19 Karen 10th Birthday Bash

GC institution for art and culture buffs, 19 Karen, is turning 10. And they’re celebrating in total style of course with a night of art, music and all around fun times. As well as two new shows—Angie Goto’s ‘You Be You’ and Alison Mooney’s ‘Acres Of Diamonds’—there will be tunes from GC blues duo The James Street Preachers and noms by Lilicious Catering. Win!

Ministry Of Sound At HOTA, Home Of The Arts

Yep, that’s right. The Ministry of Sound Orchestra is coming to the Gold Coast for one night only in December. Held at HOTA’s outdoor stage, the unmissable set will combine their signature electronica with symphonic sounds. Think: memorable dance tracks with an orchestrated twist. The event will be the first stop on the Ministry of Sound’s Australian tour and the one and only Queensland show—so don’t miss out! Pre-sale tickets are only sale now.
