Is it seriously October already? WTAF. May as well just put a line through this month too, right? WRONG. There’s way too much goodness happening to write this month off.
From craft beer festivals, to outdoor cinemas, new night market offerings, and an after-dark yoga silent disco, there’s a whole lotta things to do on the Gold Coast this October.
Free the Hops Craft Beer Festival | Saturday, October 1 to Sunday, October 9
Celebrating the Gold Coast’s blossoming craft beer scene, Free the Hops is nine days dedicated to all things boutique beer. If you missed the action of opening weekend, there’s still a bevvie of events to sink your beer-swilling boots into. From beer-pairing degustations, to tap takeovers, beer trivia nights, multi-venue brewery tours, backyard barbies with pigs on a spit, plus local brews galore. Check out the full wrap up of events here.
Ben & Jerry’s OpenAir Cinema | October, Thursday 6 to November, Sunday 6
The wait is over, folks! Ben & Jerry are blowing up their screen as we speak in preparation for a month of flicks and ice cream scoops under the stars. Surrounded by Norfolk pines and the sandy shores of Broadbeach, you’ll want to act fast to nab yourself a bean bag at what’s shaping up to be one of the best things to do on the Gold Coast in October. Top picks we’re loving on the calendar include War Dogs, The Secret Life of Pets, and Bridget Jones’ Baby, plus classics like Saturday Night Fever and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
Burleigh Brewing New Beer Launch | Friday, October 7
Happening in conjunction with Free the Hops, we thought this one was deserving of an extra shout out. Sure, they’ve always got a rotating roster of experimental drops at the brewery, but it’s not every day this 10-year-old powerhouse bottles one up and distributes it to the masses. Kicking off from 3pm, celebrate Fri-YAY and the release of Burleigh Brewing’s newest addition, Twisted Palm (AKA Burleigh in a bottle) with a social arvo at the taphouse. There’ll be live music, food trucks, and high fives all ‘round.
Flow After Dark Silent Yoga | Tuesday, October 11
Calling all yogis! If you love to mix up your practice—say with some moody disco lights and smooth live DJ beats—you’ll want to nab tickets to Gold Coast’s first Flow After Dark Silent Yoga event, at Southport Sharks. With your own private party in your earphones (supplied, duh!), Kate Kendall and the team from Flow Athletic will guide you through a blissfully intense 90-minute Vinyasa yoga session. Tickets are $55 and on sale here.
Glitter Festival | Thursday, October 6 to Sunday, October 9
The glitter strip’s very own fest to celebrate and embrace our queer community will be getting sparkly all weekend. Glitter Festival’s 2016 schedule is all about freedom of expression and inclusiveness; basically the roster of dance, comedy, music, cabaret, theatre, film, and visual arts is too packed to list here, so jump onto the website and choose your poison.
Celebrate Gold Coast | Sunday, October 9
We heart the Gold Coast any day of the week, but this is one special community shindig to show our sunny surf city how much we really care. Chevron Island’s Thomas Drive will be shutdown to host a street party celebrating the impending arrival of summer. Come for the pop-up market stalls, suitcase rummage sales, craft workshops, eats from existing local restaurants and visiting food trucks, two music stages, and festivities. Us? We’ll be timing our visit for the Beautiful Girls, scheduled to hit the main stage at 2pm.
The 4217 Markets | Saturday, October 15
We hear it was a sweet line up of local creatives, food purveyors, workshops, and activities at The 4217’s inaugural monthly markets. Now all they need is you! Returning in October will be over 25 pop-up stalls joining permanent faves such as Paradox Coffee Roasters, Salt Meats Cheese, and CHA Tea.
The Social Markets at Mermaid Beach Bowls Club | Saturday, October 15
Did someone say NEW night markets? Hola! It’ll be barefoot bowls on steroids, when this social Aussie sporting pastime is joined by a gaggle of pop-up market vendors. Expected at this inaugural bi-monthly The Social Markets are art, design, fashion, and homewares stalls, plus a food truck alley, local craft beers, local musos, and DJs. Hosted by the same team behind the well-established Isle of Capri markets—could this be one of the coolest new things to do on the Gold Coast in October?
Buskers by the Creek | Saturday, October 15 and Sunday, October 16
With SWELL over for another year, we know you’re looking for any old excuse to drag the fam bam back down to magical Currumbin. Well folks, this is a damn fine reason—the return of Buskers by the Creek. Smattered along the Currumbin estuary foreshore adjacent to Duringan Street, this family-friendly event has a whopping 280+ artists and performers lined up for the weekend-long fest. Think: a swag of live bands and solo musos, circus acts, contortionists, comedians, dance troupes, and aerial BMX tricksters, plus market stalls and food trucks with ample street eats to munch down on. Those good vibes come for free.
Women on Water with Surfing Queensland | Saturday, October 15 and Monday, October 24
Have you promised yourself that THIS summer you’ll finally learn to SUP, or perhaps you’re itching to work that awkward wobble out of your paddle skills? On their tireless mission to get people active on the water, the generous folk over at Surfing Queensland will be hosting a series of Women on Water stand-up paddle boarding sessions. Taking place on beautiful Tallebudgera Creek and free to participate (that’s equipment, instruction, and rad chick company for nada), be quick to secure your spot on October 15 or 24 (or November 5 and 19 the month following).
Castrol Gold Coast 600 | Friday, October 21 to Sunday, October 23
If you’ve not cruised through Main Beach and Surfers recently, you will have missed watching the race track being erected in preparation for the turbo-charged Gold Coast 600! Been before and already know what it’s all about? Well, perhaps this year you might be tempted to mosh to impressive muso headliners including The Rubens, Birds of Toyko, Peking Duck, and The Living End. Then, while you’re at it, hit up Club600, an 18+ day club with some hot minx female DJs set to steal the show from the noisy V8 supercars. Two-day trackside and party passes start at $115 per person.
Marry Me At Marketta | Sunday, October 23
‘Tis the season for wedding bells, so if it’s your turn to walk down the aisle next, you’d best be marking this date in your diary. For Marry Me At Marketta, Miami Marketta will be transformed into a whimsical ceremony and reception venue at the hands of a swag of stylish local suppliers. Admire their handiwork then discuss face-to-face how they can each assist to bring your wedding ideas to life. Book your ticket (just $12) to coincide with one of four bridal fashion parade sittings. Wedding catering suppliers and food trucks will also be on hand to sample their wares, and the bar will be open to help you in coaxing along your hubby-to-be.
