Melbourne’s Most Awesome Feel-Good Businesses

Social enterprise, what’s it all about, hey? “Doing good!” I hear you cry! And what’s so good about doing good, Listers? Why, feeling good, of course! As a city that’s full of smart people with kind hearts, Melbourne has fast become a hub of awesome social enterprises (businesses that give back to society, whether through charities or other means). We’ve tracked down our favourites, whether you’re in need of a coffee, an art print or some loo roll.

Shebeen | Melbourne CBD

Uber-cool Melbourne CBD bar Shebeen serves a great selection of local and international beers and wines alongside a delicious menu of bahn mi, salads and sliders. Unlike other bars, 100% of Shebeen’s profits go towards doing good. Exactly where they go depends on the origin of the drink you’re sipping on. Genius, no?!

Many Hands | Online

We stumbled upon Many Hands when we read about their Pozible crowd-funding campaign. Based out of Collingwood, Many Hands online store sells art prints and t-shirts by local artists and designers, and then donates 50% of the profits to Melbourne-based charities. The group is still raising funds, so why not pick up a print or t-shirt from a leading emerging artist to help them reach their target? We hear they’ve got a few cracking events coming up soon too—watch this space!

Thankyou | Various stores

Water, snacks, muesli, hand cream…Thankyou have somehow managed to turn EVERYTHING into a good deed! You’ll find their products in mainstream and organic grocers (we stock up on the hand soap from our local Woolies) and, depending on what you buy, you’ll be funding water, food, and health projects around the world. Everyone’s a winner!

Who Gives A Crap | Online

Aiming to make every wipe count (their words, not ours…), Who Gives A Crap supplies recycled toilet paper to homes and businesses around Melbourne and donates part of the profits to building toilets in developing nations. Started by three smart cookies based in Collingwood, the company has provided 46,500 people with toilets since 2012—amazing! Plus their rolls come wrapped in beautiful striped packing paper that will make you smile every time you open a new one.

Streat | Melbourne CBD, Southbank and Flemington

Cafe group Streat is one of our favorite Melbourne businesses with heart. Their three Melbourne cafes not only serve tasty food and support disadvantaged young people financially, they also act as a skills hub, training those in need so that they can get long-term work. Makes sense, no? Unfortunately their Flemington cafe is closed right now, but it will open again next month with a brand new look. Hurrah!

One Night Stand Sleepwear | online

As well as making some of the coolest and most comfy sleep shirts, socks and shorts we’ve ever napped in, Melbourne fashion brand One Night Stand helps feed those who are sleeping rough on the streets of cities around Australia. One Night Stand is one of our top picks for gifts that give back too—don’t know what size of shirt your friend wears? Their oversized nightshirts are the perfect solution!

Kinfolk | Melbourne CBD

We’re suckers for a pun, which is why Kinfolk (they “give a fork,” ha!) caught our eye! The beautiful CBD cafe donates 100% of its profits to a whole host of charities, meaning that your morning flat white will taste extra-delicious.
