Urban Listers, when it comes to planning your outfit for the Spring Racing Carnival, you know your follicles are as important as your fascinator, right? After all, there's no point investing in a stylish piece of headwear if you don't have the luscious locks to match!

Keen to get an early lead in the style stakes, we turned to the best hairdressers in Melbourne for their tips on the hottest hair trends for Spring Racing – turns out they've been pretty inspired themselves by the recent Fashion Week runways!

From sleek ponytails to textured up-dos, keep reading for the runway inspired 'dos that'll cement your status as Spring Racing's most fashionable filly.

THE SLEEK PONYTAIL | OSCAR DE LA RENTA

The Expert: Chantelle from Telleish Hair Studio

"The sleek ponytail is shaping up to be one of the biggest Spring Racing hair trends this year. You can also wear your ponytail high, low, straight, curled or waved – the main thing is that the style is super easy to maintain throughout the day. Overall, it's about matching the hair to the hat and the outfit for a complete, balanced look. If the dress is big, keep the hair simple, soft and classy. Alternately, an outfit that's a little more pared back allows you to experiment more with your hair."

THE CASUAL LOW BUN | MICHAEL KORS

The Expert: Emma from Three Blind Mice

"The low bun is so simple to create and looks so effortless – no wonder it's a major hair trend this Spring Racing Carnival! This style is best is you're wearing a hat – simply scrunch dry the hair then pull back into a casually swept low bun, ensuring you keep the texture in the front and sides by running your fingers through. Use bobby pins to secure the bun, rather than an elastic, and spray with a strong hairspray."

THE FRENCH ROLL | CAROLINA HERRERA

The Expert: Anna from Anaka

"My favourite Spring Racing hair trend? Definitely the classic hairdo – think a French roll or chignon as these looks never date and are also oh-so-functional. The sleek ponytail, which you can wear with either a side or middle part, is another great option along with a beautiful relaxed wave. Makeup can be worn very clean in order to let the hair shine – if anything, go for emphasis on the lip."

THE TEXTURED UP-DO | ZAC POSEN

The Expert: Debbie from The Poodle Blow Dry Bar

"This Spring Racing Carnival, I'm picking textured up-dos to be one of the biggest hair trends. From the French roll with volume to the supersized bun, textured top knot or even the faux-bob, it's all about hairdos with attitude. Just make sure you wash and dry your hair the day before, not the day of. Why? Day-old hair works much better and helps keep the up-do in place. Oh and don't forget a mini hairspray and bobby pins in your clutch!"

THE LOOSE BRAID | RACHEL ZOE

The Expert: Sarah from Biba Carlton

"One of the hottest trends from the recent Fashion Week runways was the loose braid, which I'm tipping to be THE hairstyle of the Spring Racing Carnival. Soft mermaid waves or curls are also hot this spring, as are fishtail braids - just remember, the looser and more relaxed, the better! If you want something a bit more special, a romantic tousled up-do is another great option or if you have really long hair, a faux bob is a great trick. Just tuck the hair up to your hairline to create a loose sexy bob and voila!"
