The New Bayside Cocktail Bar That’ll Knock Your Socks Off

We’ve always known The Joinery in Elwood as one of Melbourne’s best cafes in the Bayside area, with a breakfast and lunch menu that’s out-of-this-world tasty. (I mean, have you tried the Breakfast Plate or the American BBQ short ribs? If not, I don’t think we can be friends any more).

Food and snacks aside, there’s something else about The Joinery that’s getting us hot under the collar. They’ve just launched a new cocktail bar and, after checking it out, we can safely say it’s pretty damn awesome.

Yup, if you’re on the hunt for tasty cocktails in Melbourne, but don’t want to deal with the CBD masses, The Joinery’s cocktail bar is for you. Housed in a cosy, intimate space that adjoins the main cafe area, The Joinery are mixing, shaking and stirring some darn delicious cocktails (gosh how we love ‘research’), best enjoyed alongside their killer bar menu.

A welcome addition the Elwood’s thriving restaurant and bar scene, The Joinery team have left no stone unturned in their quest to create the ultimate night out, whether it’s a low-key drink with friends or a date with that certain someone you’ve got your eye on. There’s a well-stocked bar—pretty much a wall of spirits, liqueurs and top-shelf booze—and expert bartenders on hand who push the notion of a traditional drinks list, instead creating some of the best cocktails Melbourne’s Bayside ‘burbs have seen.

Our top picks are the Strawberry Mint Julep, created with Buffalo Trace bourbon whisky, muddled strawberries, simple syrup and mint grown in The Joinery’s own garden, or The Waterhole, a genius combination of cold pressed watermelon juice, maraschino liqueur, and simple syrup, shaken with Mountain Goat Summer Ale. (Editor’s note: beer and cocktails?! Best. Thing. Ever!)

The Old Fashioned is another must-try cocktail—a perfect mix of bourbon whisky, simple syrup, Angostura bitters and orange rind. Simple, yet executed oh-so-well, it’s drinks like these that show just why The Joinery is one of the best new Melbourne cocktail bars.

But I digress. It’s the Supreme Espresso Martini at The Joinery that’s, well, pretty darn supreme and one of the best espresso martinis down Bayside way. It all starts with a freshly brewed single espresso shot using Supreme coffee beans. From there, it’s shaken vigorously with Eristoff vodka, Kahlua, Crème de Cacao and sweet chestnut liqueur for a cocktail you won’t soon forget.

If the cocktails don’t take your fancy (seriously?!), The Joinery also have an excellent selection of local and international beers, wines, sparkling and cider that’ll please even the most high-brow drinks connoisseur out there. Add a bar snack or two from the tasty-as menu—we highly recommend the ham hock croquettes, chilli chicken wings, or mushroom and chestnut san choi bow—and you’re set for a great night out in Melbourne, minus the hour-long cab queue.

As perfect for cosy catch-ups and intimate dates as it is for larger groups and functions, this new Elwood cocktail bar is destined to become your favourite.
