We LIVE for this time of year. Give us a huge festival dedicated to showing off the best food and drink in Melbourne and count us IN.

The theme of this year's Melbourne Food and Wine Festival (MFWF for short) is Community. That means sharing your food and sitting around communal tables, because obviously that's the cool thing to do. Since it's a MASSIVE week of eating and drinking, we made a list of the tastiest events happening at the festival. Cheers!

Things To Eat

United Nations of Dumplings

Let’s get straight to the point: anything that’s titled United Nations of Dumplings is going to be epic. Our friends at Oriental Tea House are hosting a two-hour experience with SIXTEEN different flavours of dumpling. Bet you can’t even name five! Think turkey momos with tomato-cilantro sauce from Nepal and maple syrup dumplings from Quebec. Yeah...you’ve never seen dumplings like this before.

Exploring Connection Dinner

For two nights only, Dinner By Heston will be hosting Exploring Connection Dinner which will see Australian artist David Bromley team up with Ashley Palmer Watts. The team will show an insightful and dynamic intersection between art and food, and guests will be treated to a special tasting menu while Bromley paints a piece of work live each night.

60kg Prawns. 60 Bottles. 60 People.

Roll up the sleeves. At this event, you’ll be peeling back 60kg of prawns at a communal table while the chef cooks the little guys right in front of you. Even better, it comes with 60 bottles of wine from Yering Station...so, like, are you even doing any work? We’ll take a wild guess that this is for the first 60 people to sign up.

Where: David’s, Prahran
When: 7pm-9pm, Tuesday 20 March

5-Course Honey DInner At Eureka 89

You like honey, right? We sure as hell do. Eureka 89 is hosting a five-course dinner using the nectars from five different hives on rooftops around the CBD. (First of all, there are fully functioning beehives in CBD. Let that sink in.) Each of the locally produced honeys (honies?) has been created by a different community of bees and incorporated into an element of each dish. Sweet.

Where: Eureka 89
When: 6:30om-10:30pm, Tuesday 20, March

Taste Of Asia

Hosted at South Melbourne's Luminare, Taste Of Asia will feature the likes of Lucy Liu, Coda, Spice Temple, and Mama's Buoi. This sit-down banquet will showcase the very best of Asian cuisine, and is hosted by Nathan Earl and Christ Taylor from the popular TV show—Plonk.

Tolarno Balinese Pop-Up

Dreaming of heading to Bali but don’t have the time or money? Same. Lucky for us, Tolarno Eating House is bringing in Melbourne expat, Janet Deneefe (who opened Cafe Luna in Ubud). She’ll be serving up our fave Bali foodz like Babi Guling (suckling pig, with braised leaves and crispy trimmings) and Betutu Ayam (roast chicken with snake beans and roasted coconut). Nom. Tickets will set you back $99 (it includes a cocktail and two-course meal), but hey, that’s cheaper than a flight to Bali.

Where: Tolarno Eating House
When: 7:30pm, Friday 23 March and Saturday 24 March

All-American Vegan Diner

We understand the classic American diner is usually filled with greasy burgers, bacon and sausage brekkies (not to mention heaps of non-Australian, subpar coffee). Well nope. Not this one. The Creators Lounge is whipping up an American diner menu that’s FULLY VEGAN. It’ll include juicy ribs (fake ribs), melting Philly cheese steak (fake steak) and good ole apple pie (real apples). Alright...let’s see how this compares.

Where: The Creators Lounge, Footscray
When: 16-20 March

World's Best Butter Chicken Pop-Up

Have you ever loved a food so much that you wanted to fly that chef to the other side of the world just so they can make you butter chicken? Well, after falling in love with butter chicken on his last trip to India, George Calombaris is bringing the world’s best butter chicken chef, Saransh Goila, all the way from Mumbai to Melbourne. That’s goals. Now we NEED to try this chicken.

A Historic Cocktail Journey

Have you ever wondered who the genius was that mixed espresso, vodka and coffee liqueur together? Well, learn about it! A cocktail story has been created by drinks experts at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, so now you can understand what the mastermind was thinking when he made an Espresso Martini. Expect sh*t to get creative AF.

Doggy Winery Tour

Pastuso’s Chef Alejandro Saravia will be cooking a five-course meal on an open fire using locally sourced produce (and paired with premium local wines from Bass Phillip). Fancy. We like it.

Mercantile Place Block Party

We love block parties! And the Waterside Hotel is hosting a pretty interesting one. Apparently, you’ll need to enter via the Mercantile Place laneway into the “Doghouse” – a place without rules or boundaries and where inhibitions are left at the door (er, wut?). Then start your block party experience with an American style hot dog (again, wut?). So, hang out in a laneway, have no regrets and eat a hot dog? We've heard of stranger things.

When: Friday 16 March

Ultimate Dumpling Making Party

Making dumplings is no easy feat. Well guess what—OTAO Kitchen is hosting a dumpling making party to teach you how to fold, fill and feast on addicting momos. It’s a two-hour class, so expect to inhale heaps of dumplings and wine. See ya there, yeah?
