With avocado prices skyrocketing across the city, it’s no surprise that the go-to smashed avo breakfast that we’ve all come to love and depend on for our weekly brekkie fix has been affected by a price hike.

But fear not dear Listers, for we’re here to give you the low down on a brand new trend that’s rockin’ the suburbs. It may not be green, and it may not be as easy to re-create at home, but it tastes just as good piled on toast and teamed with your fave toppings. The best part? It comes with a much lower price tag too.

Introducing the smashed pumpkin… because three's a trend.

Tall Timber

This Prahran café located on bustling Commercial Road may be responsible for the first ever pumpkin smash. Either that or Tall Timber just do It really well—so well in fact, that you’ll be asking yourself why you’ve never cheated on avocado before! The dish you’re after is the Roast Pumpkin Bruschetta, featuring a toast base, piled with pumpkin smash, topped with poached eggs, feta and hummus, and finished with pine nut dukkah and basil. Wash it down with your coffee of choice, and we can guarantee this is going to become a permanent dish on your weekly brunch rotation.

Stagger Lee’s

With a focus on vibrant flavours and in-season produce, Stagger Lee’s in Fitzroy prove they’re no stranger to the pumpkin smash with their very own Pumpkin & Kale brekkie stack. Served with toast, romesco, creamy goats cheese, smoked almonds and a poached egg on top for good measure (and a hit of protein), this little guy sure is delish—but he’s only on the menu every now and then, so make sure you snap it up next time you’re in!

Two by Two

For a super healthy breakfast that’s going to kick off your weekend the right way, you can’t go past Two by Two in Northcote. Here, you’ll find a whole heap of yummy breakfast options, like the one and only roasted butternut smash intertwined with goats cheese, pumpkin seeds, crispy shallots and a dash of coriander. And, to make it even more special, it’s all beautifully layered over yummy quinoa toast. Yep, quinoa toast is a thing! Sounds pretty good huh?

And for an out of town option... Flock Café

Who needs avocado when you’ve got the Pumpkin & Goats Cheese Smash waiting for you at Flock Café in Mornington? Sure it’s a few kilometers out of Melb-town but when a breakfast this good graces your plate, it’s definitely worth the drive. Order up to enjoy a smattering of smashed pumpkin, topped with freshly roasted hazelnuts, a sprinkling of pumpkin seeds and dukkah. Oh and did we mention there’s an egg too? Yeah, this baby is big!
