Well, well, well… we didn’t see this one coming!
There’s no denying the Gold Coast has a deep love affair with markets of the night time variety. We’ve got two massive permanent fixtures and a host of pop-up versions, which ensures us lucky folk can NEVER complain that there’s nothing to do on the weekend.
So it was a pleasant surprise to receive news that preparation for another mega night market is currently underway, srsly! From the same team who delivered the wildly successful NightQuarter—a precinct that has hands down revolutionised the nightlife scene in the north—is developing The FareGround on a vacant site in Carrara early 2018. Far out brussel sprout!
Given the NightQuarter formula has been so well received, there will be space for 100 semi-permanent vendors including street food stalls, pop-up bars, and local retailers. There’s also promise of a purpose-built stage and entertainment area providing yet another platform for the city’s talented musos, as well as capacity to host national and international touring artists.
We’ve been told old-world fairgrounds with beautiful carousel rides, classic ferris wheels, side-show alleys, and street performers have inspired the creators, with these carnival-style elements set to distinguish The FareGround from other offerings on the Gold Coast. Basically, it’s going to be the biggest night market in freakin’ Australia. On our doorstep. Um, yep!
We’re already lusting hard over what will be the centrepiece of this new night market site—a majestic 250-year-old Moreton fig tree, with twinkle lights strung throughout its expansive branches to form a magical canopy. Underneath visitors can mill about, dining on street eats, drinking, and socialising. Sounds pretty cool, eh? It’s anticipated The FareGround will operate every Friday and Saturday night from 3pm to 10pm and Sundays 1pm to 8pm, plus Wednesday and Thursday nights through school holidays.
Sure it’s still a bloody year and a bit away, but if 2017 is anything like 2016 (AKA the fastest year in history), it’ll be here in a heartbeat.
Phew Gold Coast, we don’t know about you, but we can’t keep up with all the incredible comings and goings. What a time to be alive!
