Decked out with cacti filled drum kits, an extravagant psychedelic mural, homely couches and makeshift pallet tables, Mo’s Desert Clubhouse is the gritty creative and music space the Gold Coast didn’t know it was missing.
Fuelled by electrifying music, good vibes and an absolute love for the arts, Kim, Christian and Emilia have stepped up the warehouse game in a big way. This is a roller door up, hair down kind of place. You’ll either want to wear your finest tasseled boots or perhaps feel the breeze between your toes, as you groove to some of the best local bands. Rock out, get creative or make use of their collaborative work space, all while these three pull you in, wrap their arms around you and welcome you into the family of Mo.
Drawing an eclectic crowd, the warehouse’s sky high roof is adorned with twinkling fairy lights and rustic tapestry towers over a generous stage, setting the scene for a selection of hand-picked live events to come. There’s no questioning word is spreading quickly about this epic spot that will soon be a regular local hangout for GC’s coolest cats (that means you). Set in Burleigh’s industrial state, Mo’s open and airy space is the hazy tropical mirage amidst the tumbleweeds we thought could only be dreamed up—but this time it’s real.
The product of a chance meeting at Burning Man in the US, power couple Kim and Christian met with now business partner Emilia about a year ago. “We were really lucky she wasn’t crazy,” explains Kim. Mo is short for Mojave, the desert where Kim and Christian hit the jackpot with Emilia. These three have built up this epic venue at fast speed however all of the finishing touches are in place. “We wanted to create a space for people to come and hang out at, sit in the sun and make use of the facilities, everyone is welcome!”
Kim’s background in radio progressed into owning her own gig venue and finally a band management business with Christian called Beats Cartel. With artist Emilia on board and Christian’s musical equipment, the three decided they each needed a work space. Despite Kim and Christian living on the Sunshine Coast and Emilia in Yamba, the Gold Coast was beaming with opportunity somewhere in the middle and, just like that, Mo’s was born. And we’re so glad it did, because, well, we all need a place to spill our creative juices, too.
With an adjoining cafe in the works, Kim says guests are welcome to use their communal kitchen to make coffees, bring snacks to events and take advantage of the large space. Sink into a vintage lounge, perch atop a cushioned milk crate, plonk on a bean bag or pull up a stool and watch the magic unfold. Whether you’re in a band, need an office space or conference room, a place to rehearse, perform or launch your EP, want to partake in yoga classes or workshops, basically Mo’s is your oyster.
Already having hosted successful events, all raising money for charity, Mo’s Desert Clubhouse is the perfect place for your next Sunday sesh. With a couple of international acts interested in playing later in the year, there’s no stopping this team of legends.
Rehearsal times span right up until 10pm so there’s sure to be a spot for you and your rockstar friends. And the industrial estate area means you can make as much noise as you like, which is hard to come by on the Gold Coast.
Come along for macramé workshops hosted by the talented Emilia or Mo’s movie nights held throughout the month, BYO blankie. Give Mo’s Desert Clubhouse a follow on Insta to keep up to date with a host of cool music shindigs and fundraising events to come, then go thank them for choosing the Gold Coast as their new home base.
