If you haven’t had a pint at The Duke, we’re afraid we’re going to have to take your Melbourne badge away. Our oldest licensed pub and a staple in Melbourne’s food scene, this is one duke that everyone wants to know. Here are the seven reasons you need to visit (like, yesterday).
1. It’s A Bloody Institution
Established in the mid-1800s (feel young yet?!), The Duke is a landmark venue in Melbourne with a rich history. A charming combination of old-school service and modern furnishing, The Duke may have gotten a few face-lifts on the way, but he’s looking mighty fine.
2. It Has Got A LIT Location
Right across from Federation Square and a skip away from Flinders Street, The Duke spans across two spacious floors making it one of our favourite all-night venues.
3. Old-School Parmas & Burgers…That Never Get Old!
Boasting a balance between flash, glamour and old-school dishes, The Duke serves classic pubs meals from scotch fillets to no-frills Philly steak sandwiches. Pork schnitzels, American beef burgers and the Lady Parma are some of the amusing, delicious options.
4. The Space Is Seriously Levels Above Your Local
From an outdoor seating area to clean timber floors; a contemporary perforated bar bench and cushy leather bar stools, this duke’s renovated interior is definitely a looker. The second floor glitters with delicate Edison light bulbs for a more date-friendly feel.
5. Warm Service From Start To Finish
Whether push comes to shove, service is stellar at The Duke.
6. Desserts, All The Desserts
Chocolate orange waffles with crushed jaffas are a must, while a grilled banana split is served with chocolate ice-cream, pistachio candy floss & crushed candied peanuts.
7. Cheese. That’s It.
Whole baked camembert? Lasagne croquettes? Pan-fried saganaki? Seriously though, how much cheese can one human fit in a meal before they become cheese? From oozy entrees to rich, contemporary mains like pan fried potato gnocchi with gorgonzola, green peas, grain mustard and crushed hazelnuts, The Duke will more than entertain your inner foodie.
