It doesn’t get much more Australian than watching sport, flanked by your mates, with a cold one in hand. Lucky for us, the Gold Coast is full of epic bars boasting big screens to watch your chosen code. Whether it’s rugby, footy, basketball or the UFC, you can get your live sport fix at one of these watering holes.
Bloke In A Bar
Owned by former NRL player and footy podcast host Denan Kemp, sports bars don’t get more legit than this. Bloke In A Bar has beers, a barbecue and plenty of banter in its purpose-built interview studio. Watch sport on one of the four big TV screens or observe Denan interview NRL players in a glass-walled studio in the middle of the bar. They even serve their own crisp craft lager, aptly named Bloke In A Bar.
Harry’s Sports Bar
The team from Harry’s Steak Bistro recently opened its very own boutique sports bar, right next door. Harry’s Sports Bar is adorned with sporting memorabilia from the greats, including Sir Donald Bradman and Cathy Freeman and large TVs. The menu is epic with bar snacks including buttermilk chicken wings and fried pickles with creamy chipotle aioli. Keep an eye on their Instagram to see the weekly line up of live sport and their daily food specials. Our picks? $20 rump steak on Monday and $10 wings on Thursday.
The Star’s Sports Bar
If you’re a die-hard fan and your game is streaming at an ungodly hour (soccer, we’re looking at you), The Star’s sports bar is your best bet. Open 24/7 and boasting 23 screens, you’ll feel like you’re on the field while watching a game on their massive 10 metre screen. Special occasion? Book a booth with a built-in esky. They stream all the major players including NRL, AFL, NBA, NFL, UFC, the Super Bowl and more.
Burleigh Heads Hotel
Located on The Esplanade, opposite the beach, the Burleigh Hotel is an official home of the UFC. They show every UFC main event live and loud on their big screen. You can also catch the football, NBA, tennis and cricket here. Just head to their website and check their live sports guide for an up-to-date calendar. Tuck into a chicken parmi or gourmet meat pie while you watch the play by play. Plus, if you live in the 4220, every Tuesday they reward the locals—buy one main meal and get the second for just $10.
Crafty’s Sports Bar
One of the newest kids on the block, Crafty’s is the most family-friendly sports bar. This casual eatery is flooded with natural light, leafy green plants, comfy booths and breezy fans. Throughout 2019, they’ll be streaming NRL, AFL, NFL, NBA and special event sports. If you’re bored by the match on screen, challenge your friends to one of their competitive games, from ping pong to cornhole.
