We all (hopefully) understand the importance of being Green. It is 2019, after all. Living a sustainable and responsible life is no longer a choice, it’s the only option. From a local perspective, caring for the earth means caring for the Gold Coast’s stunning beaches, clean water, amazing hinterland and diverse wildlife. Enter Gold Coast Green Week, a ten-day festival of activities that celebrate our incredible local environment. This year’s line-up consists of over forty-five events hosted by a range of community organisations and businesses.
So, roll up your sleeves, get out and about, and learn of the local creativity, passion, research and innovation that is protecting the natural wonders of the Gold Coast. Here are some of our fave events to get you started.
NaturallyGC Creatures of the Dark | Friday 31 May
Looking for something different to do on a Friday evening? Why not turn on your night vision and join WildCall in Burleigh for an after-hours adventure in the dark. You’ll be able to hear the nocturnal rumblings of native creatures while spotting some of Australia’s most iconic animals. The free walk, which kicks off at 6:30pm, will be followed by a half-hour wildlife show.
Land + Sea Clean | Saturday 1 June
Thanks to the combined forces of a stack of local community organisations, the Land + Sea Clean promises to not only give Tallebudgera Creek a thorough once-over, it will also be a whole bunch of fun. Running from 8am to 12pm, you can register to use a kayak or stand-up paddleboard to help clean those hard-to-reach mangroves, islands and beaches. There’ll be prizes for the largest hauls of rubbish, a yoga session, and don't forget to pack your picnic blanket as after the clean up there’ll be food and festivities.
Regional Botanical Garden Guided Walk | Sunday 2 June
How much do you know about the Australian native gum tree? Not much? Good, because the theme for this trek is ‘The World’s Most Remarkable Tree’. As part of Friends of the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens programme of regular guided walks, this is your chance to relax, breath some fresh air, and learn a little about the environment around you. Running from 10am to 11:30am, the free walk will take you through the Gum Tree Corridor where you’ll learn why Australia’s iconic gum tree is referred to as the world’s most extraordinary tree.
Gecko’s Wildlife Expo | Sunday 2 June
We often forget about the furry friends and colourful critters that we share the Gold Coast with. This event is your chance to reconnect with and learn about the animals that also call the Gold Coast home. Held at the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary from 10am to 2pm, there’ll be lots of furry, slippery and scaly creatures to say hello to, as well as workshops, activities and plenty of information on how our wildlife likes to live and what you can do to preserve their habitat.
Bats Fly Out | Sunday 2 June
Have you ever seen a ‘fly out’? You probably have and didn’t even know it. A fly out is when our local flying fox population takes off on its nightly search of food. Bats Fly Out is an event designed to get you up close and personal to our tiny friends as they begin their evening hunt. As part of the event, a member of Bats Queensland will give a short talk about the fly out and then answer all of your questions. Held in Broadbeach from 4:30pm to 6:30pm, take this opportunity to see and learn about these amazing, but very noisy, little guys.
NaturallyGC Guided Bushwalk Coombabah Lakelands | Saturday 8 June
The Australian scrub. We’re famous for it. But when was the last time you took a stroll through it? Kicking off at 9am, this free event will guide you through a melaleuca wetland and eucalypt forest, giving you the chance to learn about the environment and spot some wildlife along the way (the park is home to a number of eastern grey kangaroos, native birds and koalas).
Green Week Wrap Up Party at Balter Brewing | Sunday 9 June
We’ve cleaned up our waterways, we’ve learnt about our native wildlife, we’ve taken a walk through the bush. Now it’s time for a drink! Drop by Balter Brewery’s Currumbin taproom from 4pm for live music, Greenhouse Canteen & Bar delights, an ocean art exhibition and two fundraising raffles. Plus, if you participate in the Currumbin Alley beach clean from 9am to 10am, you’ll receive a token that allows you to redeem your free Balter Brewery gift at the party.
Gold Coast Green Week is coordinated by Gecko Environmental Council, Gold Coast Catchment Association and Surfrider Foundation Gold Coast & Tweed. It’s a great community event that is well worth your time. Do yourself, and the environment, a solid and get involved.
