10 Events You Can’t Miss This Weekend

It’s a classy affair in Sydney this weekend, with wine festivals, fashion events and free souvla thrown in for good measure. There’s a lot to get through, so we are officially giving you permission to kick off your weekend early, on Thursday. Any excuse will do, right? Here’s what’s on in Sydney.

Thursday 19th May

Häagen-Dazs™ House At The Rocks 

Calling all ice-cream lovers... That's everyone, right?! Grab a spoon and get yourselves down to Häagen-Dazs™ House, the fantastic pop-up featuring the world’s tastiest ice-cream, which is at the Overseas Passenger Terminal at The Rocks all weekend. But hurry the pop up ends Saturday 21st May—don't miss out on your chance to enjoy the delicious ice-cream flavours at this unique pop up! The team will also be on hand to serve you scoops from $6 a pop and take-home tubs for $15 but you'd better be quick—there are limited numbers. Weekend dessert plans = Sorted.

Annual Winter Rooftop Party at The Glenmore

Winter is on its way (does it feel like we’ve been saying that for months?) and to celebrate, The Glenmore is hosting their annual winter wonderland rooftop party. Let’s be honest. It probably won’t be that cold, because Sydney still hasn’t got the winter memo. But nevertheless, the rooftop will be decked out with glow in the dark furniture, a snow-machine and igloo cocktails and polar punch from the Smirnoff glow bar to really amp up the chilly vibes. There’ll be competitions running throughout the night, so you could win a $1000 travel voucher (now we’re talking) from Mt Buller or a snowboard from Carlton.

The Apprentice at TAFE NSW Wine Dinner

To experience a five-star dinner by the rising stars of Sydney’s hospitality industry, head along to The Apprentice at TAFE NSW Wine Dinner in Ultimo this Thursday night. While overlooking Sydney’s city skyline, you’ll enjoy a contemporary four-course menu, where the apprentices will demonstrate the skills they have learnt throughout their training. Hosted in partnership with the Pyrmont Festival, each course will be paired with premium wines by Vinifera Wines, Mudgee.

Fashion High Tea with Leona Edmiston

To celebrate the Month of Fashion, The Langham is hosting a series of afternoon tea sittings in Palm Court with Australian designer Leona Edmiston. Featuring an extra special menu by Lead Patissier, Chef Miguel Jocson and Executive Chef Thomas Heinrich, you’ll be treated to sweet treats such as lavender cake and black sesame and raspberry macarons as well as savoury butternut squash tartlets and crab and avocado “ice-cream” (yes, really). There are a number of package options available, depending on the day you choose and whether you would prefer Laurent-Perrier Champagne or Laurent-Perrier Rosé Champagne. We recommend you opt for the Rosé. Always. Bookings are essential through The Langham’s website

'Can You See Me? Theatre' Presents ‘Water Angel’

Can You See Me? Theatre is a cutting edge company, combining actors with physical disabilities and able-bodied actors in dynamic shows. They were the first company to perform a theatre piece with 11 actors in wheelchairs. Yeah, it’s safe to say that this is theatre with (the best kind of) a difference. In conjunction with Cerebral Palsy Alliance, Can You See Me? Theatre is presenting Water Angel for two nights only, with the commitment to building integration and connection through the performing arts.

Saturday 21st May

Dinner in the Secret Garden

Watch the sun set over the 416 hectares of the Australian Botanical Garden in Mount Annan this Saturday with Dinner in the Secret Garden. This is dinner that’s just a little bit different, so you will work your way through the gardens, before reaching your final, secret destination and a much-earned glass of wine. Once at the secret garden, you will be treated to canapés, a two-course meal and drinks throughout the evening, all set to the soundtrack of smooth listening and an idyllic twilight view to match.

World Whisky Day at Tokyo Bird 

Rounding out a week of whisky events, Tokyo Bird is holding their second annual World Whisky Day Tasting Flights from 1pm this Saturday. There are four flight options to choose from, each with three, four or five whiskies to taste from around the globe. This event is definitely not limited to whisky connoisseurs; in fact, their goal is to make whisky fun, enjoyable and inclusive. Plus, there will be a food and snack menu available all day. Bookings are essential and each session will run for two hours. More info can be found at their website.

Zeus Street Greek Gladesville’s I LOVE FREE SOUVLA Day

Here at The Urban List, we love Greek street food and I really do mean that we LOVE it. This weekend, Zeus Street Greek is opening their sixth Sydney store in Gladesville and to celebrate, they’re giving away free souvla. Does it get any better? Nope. All for a good cause, $2 from every pita will be donated to Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience and in return you will devour a free pita. Did we mention it’s for a good cause? And it’s free?

Taste Orange Food & Wine Festival

Thanks to our dear, sweet friends at Watsons Bay Boutique Hotel, the country is coming to the coast this Sunday with the Taste Orange Food & Wine Festival. As part of the ‘Aussie Wine Month’, the festival is the culmination of a month long line up of wine events. Taking place in Robertson Park, there’ll be food stalls showcasing the best of Australian produce as well as the main event—offerings from Orange wineries including Rowleee Wines, Slow Wine Co and Highland Heritage and many more. There’s no need to book, however we suggest that you take advantage of their pre-purchase package to save some extra dosh. Details here.

Isabella Blow: A Fashionable Life

Featuring looks from Alexander McQueen, Philip Treacy, Hussein Chalayan, Julien Macdonald and more (yes, more), Isabella Blow: A Fashionable Life is the ultimate in #wardrobegoals. In case you aren’t already hooked, here is a little bit of back-story. Isabella Blow was an English stylist, editor and muse who championed British fashion and nurtured the careers of many designers in the 1990s. This is your chance to peek into the elusive world of high fashion and gawk at 45 of her best outfits comprising clothing, hats, shoes and jewellery from more than 20 of the world’s top fashion designers. Just don’t drool on the clothes, mmmkay?
