8 of the Best Products for Fine Hair

By Rachel Stevenson - 23 Jul 2015

Flat, lifeless hair is literally the worst. Hours upon hours upon yet more hours have been spent by every one of us attempting to tszuj our hair for voluminous waves a la every celeb ever, only for it to fall flat ten seconds later. Nightmare.

In the spirit of saving some of this valuable time, we have found 8 of the best products for fine hair. Oh, and sourced some tips on how to avoid the hat-hair look all together.

#1 Aveda Invati Scalp Revitalizer

Having permanently more full hair is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. The magical Invati range from Aveda holds a blend of ayurvedic herbs that helps you keep the hair you already have (reducing hairy drain) and helps promote healthy hair growth. Best used as part of their three step system, fuller hair could be yours, all yours!

#2 Kerastase Matérialiste All-Over Thickening Spray Gel

Ever nailed a cool hairstyle, only for your hair to fall flat? We know the feels. Perfect for those of us with thinner hair, this spray thickens your hair from the inside out, resulting in thicker, stronger and fuller hair that is easy to style and isn’t at all sticky. And isn’t that the dream?

#3 L’oréal Professionnel Tecni Art Full Volume Extra Mousse

Mousse is a great way to add volume to your ‘do. Apply this one to towel dried hair before blow-drying and voila! Volumised hair will be yours for the taking (or tousling).

#4 Sachajuan Volume Shampoo

Start at the beginning and get volumised hair by switching to this shampoo. Through ocean silk technology (how fancy does that sound?) it creates structure in hair, enabling you to rock a seriously big mane.

#5 TONI&GUY Glamour Sky High Volume Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoo is a beauty staple, but did you know you could use it to get big hair too? Kill two birds with one stone with this dry shampoo—simply spray all over your hair, allow it to set for a few minutes, then work your hair into your chosen style.

#6 Evo Shape Vixen Body Giving Juice

Not for drinking, this juice is for your hair and does as it says on the bottle—it gives body to your tresses! It’s weightless, long lasting and is perfect for us fine and brittle haired folk.

#7 DeLorenzo Elements Quicksand Volumising Powder

A matte styling powder that aims to defy gravity, this powder uses sand to give hair the ultimate staying power. Keep this in your desk drawer and sprinkle it onto your hair before heading out after work. It’ll add instant texture and volume!

#8 Cloud Nine The O Gift Set

This dreamy box of goodies includes everything you could possibly need to create volumised curls, quiff up do’s and generally BIG hair. Completely different to old school curlers, these rollers are cool in the hand but heat up in the hair. Once they heat to 130ºC the rollers automatically cool down giving you perfectly curled locks. Amazing!

Tips & tricks for avoiding flat hair

Sure, you can buy all the best products for flat hair, but a tool is only as good as the person using it, so we sought some tips and tricks from the best. We chat to Aveda’s National Educator, John Hickey, who gave us the low down on getting the big hair.

Create a strong foundation

When styling your hair, begin by drying upside down, directing a lot of air flow to the root area first. This builds up the base of the (big) style you’re going for.

Choose your tools wisely

If you’re going to use round brushes to create movement, ceramic ones are a good choice as the barrel heats up to help put the style in place.

It’s all in the finish

Finish your look with a light-weight hair spray to make it stay. Alternatively, to stretch out your style, refresh your hair by adding a dry powder or dry shampoo.

Know what to avoid

People with flat hair should avoid products with too much shine on them as they can, with overuse, make the hair appear oily. Also steer clear of products with too many silicones or silicates (read the labels), as they have a smoothing effect on the hair and cause it to be heavy and hard to style. And lastly… Avoid wet and windy conditions as all that hard work that went into styling will be taken away!
