Grab The Glitter And Get To These Outrageous Sydney Mardi Gras Shows This Month

It’s going to be an explosion of glitter and debauchery from February 14 to March 1 when the Sydney Gay And Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival kicks off—and we are counting down the minutes.

As one of the biggest pride parades in the world, you should already have your outfit planned and the date circled on your calendar, but with an absolutely glowing festival lineup, there’s a slew of other performances you need to add to your hit list.

If you’re feeling a little overwhelmed by the choices and don’t know where to unleash your party spirit, we’ve partnered with Sydney Mardi Gras to help narrow it down to six wildly extra events—aside from the parade—that you need to grab tickets to before they sell out.

Fuck Fabulous

An empowering cabaret show of the late-night variety, Fuck Fabulous is dishing up neo-punk, anti-glamour realness. Hosted by queer femme cabaret icon Yana Alana, Fuck Fabulous is packed with comedy, dance, circus, drag, and there’s even a cheeky appearance from Scott Morrison’s alter-ego, Scatmo. While Fuck Fabulous is a stunning spectacle of talent and flair, it’s firstly a protest against the commodification of queer culture and a collective reimagining of what it means to be queer and fabulous. Prepare for a night of debauchery at the world premiere of Fuck Fabulous. It’s going to be iconic.

Hot Brown Honey

This award-winning, genre-defying show is an explosion of colour, culture and controversy. Featuring a fierce lineup of knee-slapping comedy, hip-hop politics, next-level theatre performances and frisky cabaret in this politically-charged show designed to challenge stereotypes around women of colour. Co-created by Fa'alafi and sisters Candy B and Kim "Busty Beatz" Bowers, Hot Brown Honey will make you laugh until you cry and dance in the theatre aisles. Hot Brown Honey has already taken the world by storm and is slated to be one of the top shows at the Sydney Mardi Gras festival, so we highly recommend grabbing your tickets before they’re gone.

After two sell-out years, Sissy Ball has catapulted to icon status and it’s back for one night only Saturday, February 22. Expect to see displays of fluidity and finesse on the runway as vogue houses and individual walkers take centre stage and fiercely battle it out for each category title. The night will be soundtracked by top ballroom DJs and feature appearances from international darlings of the vogue scene.

After sell-out, world premiere performances at the 2019 Midsumma Festival and 2019 Melbourne International Arts Festival, cabaret icons Mama Alto and Maude Davey are delivering an epic mashup of music, dance, comedy, burlesque, circus and poetry in this new iteration of Gender Euphoria.
