We’ve teamed up with lifestyle saviours and healthy food delivery gurus, Youfoodz to bring you our Day in The Life series: a sneak peek into the lives of some of our favourite health nuts, on-fleek fitness fanatics, and generally good-looking people. Check out the Youfoodz menu here, and prepare yourself for a healthy dose of lifestyle envy.
We caught up with Maddy King, model, Nutritional and Herbal medicine student, and girlfriend to massive hunk Kris Smith, Pilates enthusiast (she’s the face of KX Pilates. Read: we want her abs), Netflix fan, and all-round healthy honey, to find out how she spends her days, how she manages to stay looking so fresh with her busy schedule, plus workout tips for us untoned laymen, and diet advice (Gelato Messina is allowed!).
What does your perfect day look like?
I’ve just started doing an Art of Living course, so when I wake up at 6am I do 40 minutes of breathing and yoga techniques (life changing!). Then it’s either a KX Pilates class or a swim, walk, or run down on the beach.
Breakfast would be a homemade superfood smoothie.
I usually have class a few days a week on campus and online. If I’m not at class I may be on a modelling job—typically shoots for catalogue, brands, advertising, TVCs and more—and I often have events during the day, or at night, which keep me busy!
How do you squeeze fitness into your schedule?
I try to workout in the morning—it leaves the rest of the day free and makes me feel energised for everything else I have on. If I leave exercise to later in the day, I may feel too tired and not end up doing much or anything.
What do you love about healthy eating?
I love how healthy eating makes me feel—my skin glows and my mind is clearer. If I have been eating very badly for a few days I often feel sluggish.
Do you have any rituals or healthy habits you use to keep health-focused?
I recently completed an Art of Living course where I learnt some amazing breathing techniques and yoga practices which I now use at home. When I do these exercises I notice a huge difference in my energy levels, an increase in my exercise efforts, and I feel really happy. Art of Living is slowly growing in Australia from word-of-mouth, and I highly recommend everyone to try it out—millions of people are doning it all over the world.
How do you keep health and fitness a priority in your busy life?
It’s easy when you enjoy it, so I make sure to always change it up and make it fun.
When do you feel your best?
When I’ve been eating well, exercising, and have quality relaxation time.
What’s your favourite form of exercise?
For a weights workout, I like Pilates, and for cardio, I find simple, fast paced walking is brilliant.
And your most hated?
Probably walking on a treadmill or a gym machine. Once a week is fine but I need to keep mixing it up or I tend to get bored.
Where do you workout?
When I’m exercising outdoors I love to go down to the beach for a swim, walk, or go for a run. When I’m working out indoors you’ll find me on one of the reformers at KX Pilates.
Have you always been a Sydneysider?
Yes, I was born in Camden but my family moved to the Northern beaches when I was two.
What do you love about life in Sydney?
The weather, the beaches, friends and family. I love to travel but it’s always nice to come home to Sydney.
Where’s your favourite spot for breakfast?
Bondi Wholefoods is one of my favourites Sydney cafes for breakfast at the moment. The menu is full of healthy, tasty options and it has its own little grocer.
Where do you get your coffee?
I don’t drink much coffee; it doesn’t always agree with me. I normally drink herbal tea, dandelion lattes, or lately I’ve been making Matcha Maiden green tea lattes at home.
Where do you head for date night?
There are some great restaurants and pocket bars in Surry Hills so that’s my favourite area to head at the moment.
For something a little more special O Bar and Dining on George Street is pretty incredible. It has 360 degree views of the city and slowly turns so you can view the entire city without having to leave your cocktail! It has a casual lounge area (my favourite) and the more formal dining area on the other side. I think it takes almost two hours to go around once, so if you see the same spot twice, you must be having a good night!
What about for drinks with friends?
There are some great restaurants and pocket bars in Surry Hills and Redfern, that’s my favourite area to head at the moment. The Bearded Tit in Redfern is super funky, or the Norfolk on Cleveland Street for a casual beer and tacos. Both often do a great pig-on-a-spit on Sundays!
And for a cheat meal?
When I want a cheat meal Gelato Messina is at the top of list!
What advice would you give to someone who thinks they’re too busy to keep healthy?
Try to get up a little earlier, get your exercise done in the morning and out of the way. It improves your whole day. Try getting up just 15 minutes earlier at first and then increase the time gradually.
Going for a quick walk or doing something simple in your room like mat exercises or watching a Youtube exercise video can be hugely beneficial. Then you don’t have to waste time and money getting to a gym.
In terms of diet, Youfoodz is ideal for someone who’s busy but wants to eat healthily. It’s been my first premade meal experience and fits in so easily with a busy schedule.
How has Youfoodz helped you save time?
I study Nutritional and Herbal medicine, I’m often at events, working on my website, or I’m at work as a commercial model—my schedule is always changing. Youfoodz lets me make my meals in 90 seconds so it’s given me more time for everything! The best part has not being having to go the super market everyday or wait at a café and spend over $30 for one meal.
How are you using the extra time eating Youfoodz has saved you?
I didn’t realise how much time in a day I was spending feeding my stomach! Youfoodz has given me extra time for everything: school work, work emails, walking my dog, exercising, and don’t forget Netflix!
What’s your favourite thing about it?
I love good food and I often overeat. At cafes you get huge portions and when I cook meals I often cook way too much. The Youfoodz portions looked small to me at first but surprisingly I haven’t been hungry once. I feel satisfied and stay satisfied, which never happens!
Do you have a favourite Youfoodz meal or a favourite snack?
I always order the gluten free options, so my favourite Youfoodz meal would have to be the Filipino Lemongrass Chicken and Java Rice, and the peanut butter protein balls. They’re definitely one of the best protein balls I’ve ever had, and I’ve had quite a few!
Do you like to cook—if so, any favourite dishes?
My favourite dish to cook is fish. I love to steam rainbow trout in parcels—it’s so easy! Add the fish, lemon, spices and herbs to a piece of baking paper or foil, seal up in a little parcel and put in the oven for 15 minutes! So quick and delicious.
How do you relax?
I’ve spent way too many hours watching TV series on Netflix lately, which has been heaven! When I’m not out and about I’m usually hanging with Kris, my friends, taking my dog for a walk or reading a good book.
Who do you look to for fitness advice or inspiration?
My healthy friends, some of my Art Of Living teachers, and KX Pilates trainers.
