A Week On, And The Bin Chicken Is Still Winning Australian Bird Of The Year

The internet sure does have its fun, I mean, without the internet we wouldn’t have Boaty McBoatface, Trainy McTrainface, or even Ferry McFerryface, but this time the internet has gone too far.

Last week the Guardian travelled off in search of the Australian Bird Of The Year, a coveted title obviously with many amazing birds vying for it.

Some amazing Australian birds include the Superb Fairywren, Willy Wagtail, Tawny Frogmouth, Galah, King Parrot, Powerful Owl, Superb Lyrebird, Azure Kingfisher, Major Mitchell Cockatoo, Gang-Gang Cockatoo, and the Scarlett Robin, amongst many other great birds. But, unfortunately, none of these birds are winning this race.

The current leading bird of the Australian Bird Of The Year voting is….the Australian White Ibis, or the ‘Bin Chicken’ as it is affectionately known.

Now I’m a firm believer that all animals are great, but we cannot go around calling the Ibis the ‘bird of the year’. What’s even worse is the fact that the Australian Magpie is coming second. Yes, the Magpie is part of the Australian culture, but I’m amazed anybody is voting for it as 'bird of the year' when they’re currently raining down on unsuspecting pedestrian heads when you walk even remotely close to their nests.

So, if you’re playing along at home, this makes it two bad birds holding the current top two positions. At this point, our only hope for a sane win is to put our support behind the Laughing Kookaburra—the true iconic Australian bird—who at this point has half the vote of the Australian White Ibis.

You can vote here, you know what to do.

Current Top 5

  1. Australian White Ibis | 16,209 Votes
  2. Australian Magpie | 12,408 Votes
  3. Laughing Kookaburra | 8,650
  4. Tawny Frogmouth | 5,523
  5. Superb Fairywren

For the record I voted for the Gang-Gang Cockatoo. That is a cool name for a bird.
