As new watering holes continue to open their doors in Sydney's CBD, we welcome the latest resident, Mr Tipply's—a friendly neighbourhood bar serving up good food, decently priced cocktails, and plenty of charm.
Housed over two levels on the former City Hotel site, the new Sydney bar and eatery has received a colourful (and much needed) makeover, which gives it a relaxed yet refined vibe. The front bar is decked out with African wallpaper and cosy booths, perfectly suited to Mr Tipply's share-plate philosophy, while towards the back it's a bright, airy space, which spills out onto the courtyard—a little slice of heaven among the hustle and bustle of the city.
As for the food, the menu, designed by chef Elaine Lee, has an Asian bent, with morsels like barramundi fillet in banana leaf and Singapore style chilli crab. The grilled miso eggplant is sticky and sweet, while the tempura rock shrimp are little pops of utter joy. Needless to say, we couldn't stop at just a handful. You'd be forgiven for not getting to mains, but with options such as a trio of tuna and 'char siu' beef short ribs, we recommend you squeeze it all in.
The comprehensive drinks list at Mr Tipply's is awash with local and international wines, boutique craft beers, and signature cocktails, including a hard-hitting espresso martini and surprising Kimchi Mary (aged cabbage, chilli, vodka, and tomato juice). If this doesn't tickle your fancy, the kindly barkeep will whip up whatever you heart desires.
As perfect for intimate dinners as it is for kick-off drinks, be sure to check out Mr Tipply's at 347 Kent Street.
