Orchard Street Elixir Bar Opens In Bondi

By Ellie Schneider - 17 Sep 2014

It's no secret that Bondi locals are nuts for health foods. Each Saturday the farmers' markets are packed to the brim with regulars doing their weekly shopping, while up the road the queue outside Bondi Wholefoods spills onto the street. New kid on the block, Orchard Street Café and Elixir Bar, is right at home in this #cleaneating precinct.

Nestled on a quiet corner just back from the beach, the café is the second outpost from the friendly folk at Bronte's Orchard Street Dispensary. An oasis of raw goodies, juice cleanses, supplements and organic teas, stepping inside you can instantly feel a sense of wellness wash over you. There's some bench seating in the sunshine and a couple more spots indoors – but this is really more of a takeout operation, and everything comes perfectly packed to take home or enjoy on the grass.

Back inside, shelves are lined with books, powders, herbs and spices, and there's a refrigerated section down the back. But we can't seem to get past the selection of raw desserts at the counter (you know how much we love desserts!). Love heart cakes of lavender and coconut, chocolate chilli cakes, and a caramel slice that's utterly irresistible – we make ourselves right at home.

For something more substantial we recommend The Peace Pot, a probiotic rich chia pudding infused with aloe vera, chamomile and slippery elm, or the Mexican lunch, a combination of spicy beans flavoured with cocoa nibs and served with a dollop of cashew nut sour cream. If that doesn't take your fancy, sink your teeth into the beet burger with smoked cheddar sauce and salad packed between raw zucchini sunflower buns. Yum.

There's Sydney's first Wild Kombucha (a cultured living drink) on tap as well as a milk bar and fridge full of cold pressed juices. The friendly staff will happily talk you through all the elixirs but the drinks that most excite us include: the Green Guru, an alkalising, nutrient dense green juice made with kale, avocado, banana, chia seeds, lemon and probiotic supergreens; and the Cashew Chai of alkaline water, cashew nuts, lucuma, coconut butter, dates, chai spice and sea salt.

A one-stop-shop for all your wholesome needs, we choose a few more things to take home, despite knowing full well we will be back next weekend.
