Caught yourself coveting the seriously lush lashes of your favourite celeb on the red carpet / socialite on social media / that girl at the gym who (for whatever reason) is always wearing mascara yet it NEVER seems to run? Let us let you in on a (not so secret) little secret… there’s a high chance that their lashes aren’t reaaallly their lashes and that these doe-eyed beauties have embraced eyelash extensions.
Ask any eyelash extension devotee and they’ll tell you never to get lash extensions, because it’s likely that you’ll become addicted from your very first appointment. Eyelash extensions involve applying a single lash extension atop each of your natural lashes, close to the lash line with special semi-permanent adhesive. A full set of eyelash extensions takes between one to two hours and requires refills or touch-ups every two to six weeks (note to self, double espressos are NOT a good idea pre-appointment). But how about waking up like Beyonce combined with never having to remove waterproof mascara again?! Sign us up!
For anyone contemplating taking a (pretty) plunge and trying eyelash extensions for the first time, we got the down low on all things lashes from Charlotte Creasey, the owner of Sydney’s Lady Lash and a certified eyelash extension technician with over a decade of experience. She assures us that eyelash extensions won’t damage your natural lashes in the slightest when properly applied.
“You should always ensure that your extensions are an appropriate length and thickness for your natural lashes, this will mean that your own lashes will continue to grow normally” explains Charlotte.
Still worried about damaging your natural lashes? Charlotte Creasey tells to steer clear of inexperienced salons or technicians, especially those who offer “cluster lashes” as they can easily twist, become uncomfortable and damage your own lashes (eek!).
Always take the advice of your technician and save super long, dramatic lash extensions for special occasions. When in doubt, opt for shorter lashes (a few millimetres longer than your natural lashes) as they as will give you a more natural, lush look without weighing you down. Other golden rules? No pulling or picking your lashes and ensure your make-up remover is oil-free.
If you’re now convinced you’re a potential faux-lash convert; eyelash extensions, like many beauty treatments, are definitely not something you want to scrimp on—there are tweezers, glue and your eyes involved here, people!
