Cinco De Mayo is a bigger deal in the USA than it is in Mexico, and it looks like this celebration of Mexican-American culture (slash excuse to drink margaritas) is catching on in Australia. But hey, when there are delicious tacos and tequila involved, we’ll take it.
SoCal is jumping on the Cinco De Mayo train (which by the way, translates to 5 May, the day that the Mexican army fended off a French invasion against all odds in 1862) with a week-long taco and tequila festival. Week. Long.
To kick things off, they’ll have a weekend of margarita and tequila cocktail specials, with dancing and live music. Throughout the week, there’s a cook- and mixologist-off, as chefs and bartenders battle it out for the best taco or tequila creation trophy; mariachi bands; an all-you-can-eat taco feast and $10 margaritas; and a chilli-eating contest.
In science news, we can confirm you have a special stomach reserved for desserts. So fill it up with this ten-outta-ten collaboration with Andy Bowdy (Saga, ex-Hartsyard, and Insta-legend)—it’s called the Helado Domingo. Basically, it’s a bad-arse sundae of sweet corn ice cream, cajeta (a Mexican caramel sauce, traditionally made with goat’s milk), buttermilk and pastel de elote (a sweet Mexican corn cake). It’s the Mexican-inspired-dessert of your dreams, and it’ll be available for the whole SoCal fiesta. Go on, order it twice.
