It’s confirmed. Come late 2015 – early 2016, Alexandrians will be forced to share, as Sydney’s mecca for all things coffee plans to expand into the CBD. That’s right, you heard correctly, The Grounds of Alexandria is set to tackle the corporate city environment, with co-director Ramzey Choker confirming the former home of Mecca Cosmetica in The Galeries as the location for the new site.
The firm who also designed the original Grounds Café and a slew of other successful Sydney cafes, bars and hospitality venues, Acme & Co, will provide the creative vision for the move.
While wildfire-like expansion is the typical strategy for brewers that have reached such iconic roasting status, The Grounds have previously directed focus at expanding and developing the quality of their singular venue.
This coffee roastery-slash-café in Alexandria, complete with a kitchen, bakery and organic garden simultaneously boasts a coffee research facility as well as a florist and children’s petting zoo. Word has it that patrons can soon expect cider, charcuterie and a kiddy cinema to feature somewhere in The Grounds’ unique offering.
The obvious challenge of the move, however, will be the reproducing of the magical experience offered by the Alexandria site in the thick of the urban metropolis. After all, the splendid refurbished warehouse, open courtyard and green garden surrounds have ensured a visit to The Grounds comprises a well-loved activity-in-itself.
The one thing that we can be sure of is that the coffee will still be a winner.
