When you walk into a bar like Uncle Kurt’s you automatically know you’re in for a real treat. Hidden behind a car park façade just off George Street in Parramatta (the venue itself is within the City car park), you could easily miss it if you weren’t looking—but that’s exactly why you’ll love it.
With a grungy, NYC dive bar feel, I felt relaxed as soon as I was seated. The fit out is edgy and full of character, with graffiti on the walls and mismatched chairs everywhere. It’s the kind of place you’ll never want to leave.
Don’t even think about lifting a finger because it’s table service here and the staff make it their mission to ensure you order the perfect cocktail for your mood. For me, that meant the Brooklyn Never Sleeps, which is kind of like a bourbon based espresso martini, with almond and apricot flavours. It was super strong, oh-so smooth and god damn delicious.
The only thing more delicious than the cocktail was the food and let me tell you, I was not holding back. I went straight for the Uncle’s traditional Rueben sandwich so I could eat alllll of the pastrami and pastrami I ate. Paired with toasted rye bread, melted Edam cheese, some sort of magical Russian dressing and tasty AF coleslaw, I can honestly say I have never eaten a Rueben quite like it. It had just the right amount of filling and was full to the brim with flavour, so I’m sure you can understand why I decided to order two, right? Right.
Whether you’re looking for a new date spot, hidden cocktail hang or seriously delicious eats on the west side, do yourself a favour and put Uncle Kurt’s at the top of your list.
