The Verdict: Rainford Street Social

By Susannah George - 08 Dec 2013

Dining at Rainford Street Social offers an indulgence in traditional English fare with a contemporary, modern-Australian twist. First indication, the lovely farmhouse-esque Churchill plates, a stark contrast to the Pineapple Americano presented to us upon arrival.

We began our gastronomic journey with an entree of Cajun-style crispy chicken marinated in buttermilk for 24 hours, and served with a tangy slaw. This was consumed alongside a dish of lightly baked feta cheese, perfectly roasted cherry tomatoes and olive oil toast.

To complement mains, the maître d' suggested a fragrant pinot noir, it was perfect for our mid-week evening meal and appeared in our glasses prior to the pièce de résistance—Rainford Street Social's lamb ribs! A bit sticky, a lot delicious, the meat on these ribs melted off the bone. Slightly charred and smoky, the flavours were enhanced by the accompanying cabbage and crisp apple sides. Head to Rainford Street Social for these mighty ribs alone.

The classic fish pie held a significant kedgeree bent and packed a solid punch, despite the diminutive ramekin it was served in. This house special, which confirmed our Britannia suspicions, would stand up to even the most critical of pescetarians.

As the clock struck 7:30pm, seats quickly filled and the music stepped tempo with our favourite Sky Ferreira song of the moment—not on the menu but a welcome addition to the table. Even on a Wednesday night Rainford Street Social was at capacity, so be prepared to arrive early, or settle in for the night.

Dessert presented itself in the form of summer fruits, which sat atop a light and zingy passionfruit sorbet and hid a surprise crunchy and buttery brandy snap somewhere in between. The lemon meringue soufflé was also utterly delicious, topped with a wispy pinch of pink candy floss (more the Turkish than fairground variety).

Rainford Street Social comes highly recommended, whether it is for this year's work Christmas party, or a delightful dinner for two.
