If you’re anything like us and keep a watchful eye on Mexican food in Sydney, you’ll no doubt have heard of the institution that is Flying Fajita Sistas in Glebe. And if you haven’t been in for a while, you’re in for a big ol’ treat.
Having recently undergone a facelift, Flying Fajita Sistas sees its original chef taking ownership of the restaurant and along with it some exciting new changes. We headed in for a veritable Mexican feast, with all the trimmings (i.e. we drank a lot of margaritas), and here’s what went down. Spoiler: we ate a lot.
Naturally, it was our duty to get all up in the queso fundido. I mean it’s a melted. Cheese. Dip. For crying out loud. We dipped our pickled chillies in with glee and got way too excited for what was next. We went for the spiced masa dusted chicken wings, they were moreish and way too easy to get messy with. We moved on to chow down on a selection of soft tacos, the tomatillo braised beef or beer battered zucchini flowers were winners.
Never fear vegetarians, there are plenty of options for you. Other than that tempting queso fundido dip, there’s elote (Mexican corn with chipotle aioli, queso fresco and lime), chipotle pumpkin empanadas, and a plethora of mains. And if you wish to be simply saintly, go for the chickpea salad with zucchini flowers, or the palmitas salad with hearts of palm, orange, toasted pepitas and radish.
If you’re heading in with a group (good call) go for the set menu, you’ll get five courses of heavenly Mexican goodness for a reasonable $40 per head, with plenty of cash left over for a jug of sangria to share, or a delicious Rosita Negroni all to yourself.
Sweet tooths, don’t think we’ve forgotten about you! You’re in for a real treat with these Mexican desserts. Your mind will be blown by the bread pudding, with brioche, spiced pecans, Mexican chocolate and cinnamon anglaise.
For the hot sauce enthusiasts (we salute you), there’s the aptly named and infamous Wall Of Pain where you can pick the perfect sauce. Whether you’re on the hunt for one that sets fire to your mouth and gets jalapeno business, or one that simply tickles your taste buds like a cheeky chilli dancing on your tongue, there’s plenty of choice.
And when the time comes for tequila or mezcal (don’t try to fight it), there is a knock-your-socks-off range. Don’t be overwhelmed, though, there’s plenty of time to get up close and personal with the list. Ask the friendly staff if you need some help, whether that’s choosing one or getting out the door after one too many.
Look, you’ll probably end up rolling home, but that’s all the fun at Flying Fajita Sistas. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!
