We're approaching that miserable part of winter where the motivation to leave our toasty beds is becoming more and more difficult to muster. Despite the difficulty (gosh, our lives are tough), we've compiled the absolute must-see list of events in Sydney and they're definitely worth leaving the house for.
Instead of re-watching Orange is the New Black (yet again), why don't you put down the remote and have a laugh, grab a drink, score a bargain, or learn a new skill?
Here's our round up of things to do in Sydney this weekend.
The Laugh Stand With Tom Ballard
We've all been feeling a little abandoned by Mr. Ballard since his departure from Triple J Mornings and have been eagerly awaiting some new material from the outspoken funny man. To relieve the Ballard drought, FBi Social is hosting The Laugh Stand this Thursday and it's going to be an absolute cracker! Come along at 8pm to the Kings Cross Hotel, hold back your tears of joy that Tom is back, and be sure to have strict control of your bladder (eww, sorry).
Foe Like Vintage Pop-Up Shop
Sydney vintage collectors can unite and conquer at this pop-up, with bits and bobs from across the globe on display from the dudes at Foe, Like the Enemy. Foveaux Street in Surry Hills will inevitably be taken over by a small army of fashion archeologists, so get there early and be prepared to wade your way through a tide of latte-sipping and flower-crown adorned goddesses to snag that fabulous vest.
Living Laneways Handmade Market
The new Living Laneways initiative will host the Now & Then Markets in the laneways of Rockdale Town Centre to create a vibrant local haven of art, music, and shopping. Beginning this Saturday with the Handmade Market, you'll be kicking yourself if you miss out on the goodies on offer and inevitably weird and wacky stalls popping up on King Street.
Etsy Masterclass: Resin Jewellery
Reliving your childhood days of stacking innumerable colourful plastic bangles during dress-ups and pretending to be Baby Spice has never been easier. In fact, why not just make the bangles yourself? Jodie Dench of ButtonUp Design fame has finally responded to the cries of desperate bangle lovers and created a three-hour master class in her Redfern studio kicking off this weekend with glitter and glam to spare. You'll walk out with some handmade accessories that'll leave you feeling a little bit chuffed and looking a little bit awesome. Get your tickets here.
Barbecoa Sundays at The Norfolk
The fact that these guys open at midday on Sunday is indicative of their target market—the hungover folk in need of some taco goodness. Head down to The Norfolk to down a $10 Bloody Mary and share a $30 serve of Mexican gastronomic delight between two. Your pounding headache, raw stomach, and damaged dignity will ebb in the aftermath of devouring a slow-cooked adobo pork taco drowning in salsa.
Ozharvest's Think. Eat. Save.
Looking for things to do in Sydney for the greater good? Look no further! The brilliant people at OzHarvest have partnered with the United Nations Environment Program to deliver delicious food to Sydneysiders in Martin Place in an effort to highlight our endemic national food wastage. Top chefs and local politicians will be showing their support, and pop-up stalls will transform the city centre into an interactive kitchen with talks and tips on how to make your pantry a more sustainable one. The best bit? It's for a fantastic cause and it's completely free!
