What to Pack for the Perfect Picnic

By Iro Kotsimbos

While it’s no secret we love wining and dining at the best restaurants in town, sometimes there’s really nothing better than a good ol’ picnic. I mean, what says summer more than finding a great outdoor spot and devouring delicious eats and treats in the company of friends?

Don’t think you can just grab a rug, that dust-covered bottle of vino and a block of tasty cheese and run off—oh no, preparation is key to a summer’s worth of perfect picnics.

Not sure what to bring with you? We’ve got you covered with our ultimate list of what to pack for the perfect picnic…ready for you to click and shop today!

Picnic Basket

I hate to break it to you, but if you don’t sort yourself out with a good picnic basket you’re going to find it pretty darn hard to carry everything…and, you know, eat and all that. We’re loving this four-person wicker basket from Satara—big enough to carry all your foodie treats plus it comes with glasses, plates, cutlery, salt and pepper shakers, napkins, and most importantly, a bottle opener for all that grape juice you’ll be consuming.

Picnic Blanket

Regardless of where you host your picnic, you’re gonna have to park your tushy somewhere comfortable. Featuring a cool green checked pattern and carry handle, this picnic blanket by Satara is a must.

Cheese, Glorious Cheese!

When we think picnics, we instantly think of cheese (as if you haven’t noticed how cheese obsessed we are!). No picnic basket should be without a good wedge or two—the only question is which legendairy wedge of cheesy goodness to choose? Our current faves are the sweet and nutty Heidi Farm Raclette, the deliciously oozy Boosey Creek Warby Red, and the creamy yet tangy King Island Dairy Discovery Ash BlueAustralian Grand Dairy Award winning cheeses that are guaranteed to please!

Savoury Crackers

While the idea of eating fat, gooey chunks of cheese all day is tempting, we figure we should accompany all that dairy with a little bit of crunch. Fine Fettle Flats are a must for picnic basket (shop here) and come in a variety of moreish flavours—tomato & basil, spicy capsicum, zucchini & almond, and more. The best part? Fine Fettle Flats are gluten and dairy free! Nom.

Fresh Fruit from the Market

Wondering what else to pack for the perfect picnic? Summer fruit of course (ohhh how we love mangos and cherries!). There’s no better place to stock up than the local market—we’re big fans of Prahran and Queen Vic Markets in Melbourne, Eveleigh and Marrickville Markets in Sydney, and Davies Park and Northey Street Organic Markets in Brisbane.

Red, Red Wiiiiine (and white too!)

One of our favourite things about a picnic is the chance to kick back and relax…drink in hand. With their stellar Italian style drops, Victorian winemakers, Pizzini, are our go-to for stocking up the picnic basket. All their wines are fab, however we’re loving the Verduzzo Dolce, Brachetto and Sangiovese Shiraz.

Portable Speakers

Get the picnic party started, and block out that noisy child nearby, with some tunes courtesy of Sunny Life’s portable speaker (available from Lark Store). With an audio jack that’ll fit most devices, plus an AM/FM tuner, this brightly coloured gadget will help set the vibe.

If you think you can get away without the ol’ slip, slop, slap then THINK AGAIN! An SPF 50 sunscreen is vital if you’re spending time outdoors (yes, even when it’s overcast), so make sure you apply Mecca Cosmetica’s silky smooth ‘To Save Body’ all over.

A Chic Hat

Similar to sunscreen, a sun hat is a total picnic must! Ace of Something’s ‘Arizona’ straw fedora is a hot with all the style mavens for a reason—it’s cool, it’s comfy, and it blocks out all those nasty rays.

Wine / Bottle Cooler

Considering your picnic basket might just be packed to the brim with cheese, fruit and crackers, investing in a separate wine and bottle cooler is a smart idea. Satara’s bottle holder fits two precious bottles of booze, keeping them both chilled throughout your alfresco adventures.
