Keeping up with the best events, new openings, pop ups, and good things to eat in Sydney is no mean feat (and we would know!). To make your life that little bit easier, and because we love a good list, we’ve teamed up with Peroni to bring you What’s Trending: A one-stop guide to everything worth checking out in your city this month, so you won’t miss a thing.

2016 is officially over. In true Sydney style, 2017 in our fair city is already shaping up to be bigger, better and busier than ever. And it’s only January. To keep you and your crew #sorted all month long we’ve rounded up the  ten hottest things happening in Sydney this January.

#1. A Giant Ocean Of Balls Has Landed At Barangaroo

Plunge into an ocean of over one million white balls at The Beach, Barangaroo. As part of the Sydney Festival, you can take a dip in a sea without sharks (or sand) and submerge yourself in art. Created by Snarkitecture (a New York-based art collaboration), The Beach is just one of many interactive events you’ll want to get amongst at Sydney’s annual fiesta.

#2. There’s Retro Roller Disco In Hyde Park

Dust off your skates Sydneysiders; Roller Jam is coming to the CBD. Every Saturday for the entire duration of January, Hyde Park’s Archibald Fountain will transform into a totally retro roller disco, with live DJs spinning sick beats for you to boogie, shake and skate to. There will be food, drinks and plenty of falls, so don’t forget your kneepads.

#3. Society Di Catania Opens In Potts Point

If your New Year diet hasn’t started yet, seat yourself at Society Di Catania for all of the carb loading. Serving 1-metre pizzas fresh out of a wood-fired oven all day, every day, it’s the perfect place for a date, group dinner or sneaky takeout for one. Save room for dessert.

#4. Summer Playground Pops Up At Opera House

Our favourite annual pop-up, Summer Playground, is back and this year it’s channelling all things Coney Island as the Sydney Opera House’s Western Broadwalk transforms into a total vintage fanfare. There’s free entertainment, games and a pop-up venue, complete with a bar (our favourite), alfresco dining and a giant sandpit (so you can unleash your inner child judgement-free).

#5. There’s A Huge Hottest 100 Party In Parramatta Park

Everyone’s favourite day of summer is almost here (aka Hottest 100 Day) so join the masses and flock to Parramatta Park for one hell of a party. Count down the biggest countdown in the land under the Aussie sun, with a side of live music, food trucks and good vibes. See you there.

#6. Twilight At Taronga Kicks Off

Make like the holidays haven’t ended and escape OTB for a night of smooth sounds, delicious food and cute animals at Twilight at Taronga. The outdoor event (overlooking the harbour and it’s many landmarks) kicks off with Peter Garrett & The Alter Egos on January 27th and boasts an amazing line up every Friday and Saturday until March, when Martha Wainwright shuts it down.

#7. St George’s OpenAir Cinema Returns To Mrs Macquaries Chair

If you haven’t yet ventured to one of Sydney’s many outdoor cinemas, make sure you don’t miss St. George’s OpenAir Cinema at Mrs Macquaries Chair. The annual summer event offers the best of the best when it comes to an outdoor location, combining fine food and wine, with the stunning AF views that Sydney does oh so very well, so you can watch the most talked about films of the last year in style.

#8. Slideapalooza Takes Over Sydney

The world’s longest inflatable waterslide is coming to Sydney so get set to slip n’ slide your way through summer. Slideapalooza is a weekend long festival full of giant waterslides, live music and food, glorious food. Get ready for all the best waterslide related events (think Slide ‘n’ Sprint, Slide ‘n’ Sounds and Slide ‘n’ Lights) and plenty of solo sliding time for all.

#9. Dance The Night Away With Bowie

A year on from losing one of the world’s greatest musical talents, come together with fellow Bowie fans and celebrate the only way you know how, through dance. Hosted at the Meriton Festival Village (as part of the Sydney Festival), this boogie bonanza will be a total Bowie blow out, so don your best Ziggy Stardust look and don’t forget your dancing shoes.

#10.  Search For Sydney’s Best Secret Beach

Everyone knows that the best beaches are hidden; so avoid the crowds and hunt down some of Sydney’s best-kept secrets before the summer is over. Whether you want to go for a midweek dip, or stay all day Sunday, we’ve done the hard work for you and found those beaches Google Maps can’t even find, meaning you can soak up the sun in peace.
