People in Sydney are a little crazy obsessed with working out. Those same people are also fans of fried chicken and espresso martinis. Let’s just say, that if we all burned calories like we manage to burn through our pay cheque, we wouldn’t be writing this article.
So for those times when you’re short on cash, but high on enthusiasm, we rounded up the ultimate list of the best places to workout for free in Sydney.
We’ll be damned if we can make ourselves run on a treadmill for an entire hour without thinking about our post workout meal (something along the lines of a double-scoop of gelato #shredlyf). No doubt these stairs will make you say some pretty rude four letter words but hey, on the plus side, the view is bloody great.
Blackwattle Bay Foreshore Walk
You could run this one, but then you’d miss the epic scenery. Seeing as walking is still cardio, the exercise enthusiasts (and brunching active wear lovers) will definitely be giving this one two thumbs up. Working out won’t seem that painful when you’ve got the vista of the city, Sydney Harbour and Anzac Bridge in front of you.
Calling all yogis, or anyone who needs to chill the heck out (that’s pretty much all of us). Hit up Urban Yoga which is yoga, but without the scary bits. The team here mix yoga with an epic soundtrack and high def imaging, and have created one of the coolest spaces in Sydney to zone out and relax. But that’s not the best part. The best part is that your first class here is totally free.
Guys, there are so many outdoor gyms in Sydney that it’s a little bit cray. Otherwise known as glorified adult playgrounds, we obviously aren’t trying hard enough, they get the flex tick of approval from us (it’s a petty flex, but we tried). From beachfront fitness stations in Bondi and Clovelly, to inner city equipment at Camperdown Park and Prince Alfred Park in Surry Hills, (unfortunately) you no longer have an excuse not to hit the gym.
BUF Girls and 2XU Free Fitness Classes
Ok, so the legendary BUF Girls and 2XU have collabed to bring you free fitness classes. Yes, we were all thinking it, they’ve done it again. Monday evenings hosted by the BUF babes in Manly’s 2XU High Performance Centre means a seriously awesome HIIT session and Wednesday night boasts a free a Vinyasa flow yoga class.
Ever heard the phrase “if you’ve got a beach, you’ve got a gym”? Yeah, neither have we, but apparently it’s a thing and we like where this is heading. Mix up your fitness regime (or lack thereof) with beach sprints, bodyweight exercises and interval swims to cool you down.
Bondi To Bronte Coastal Walk
Alright, we’re not going to lie, this is pretty much an excuse to run ourselves straight to the foodie haven of the East, Bondi. This instafamous coastal route isn’t a bad way to start your morning because it’s an epic chance to witness the sunrise (it’s bloody incredible) and get your sweat on at the same time.
If you love burpees, kettlebell swings and muscle ups— you’re obviously fitter than us, so this one’s for you. CrossFit Sydney offers a free session for anyone who has some level of lifting experience, you’re welcome.
Barrenjoey Lighthouse Hike
When you want a hot body, but you also want tacos, grab your walking shoes because you’re going for a hike. The Barrenjoey Lighthouse track is the perfect outdoor workout. You’re rewarded with an incredible view from the top and you get twice the workout because you’ve got to get back down somehow. #Legday is still a thing, right?
Cycle From Manly To Spit Bridge
If you’ve got a bike handy, here’s the ultimate cycle track for you (and it totally beats your standard spin class). The Manly to Spit Bridge cycle route gives you the bush, ocean views, and a good few kilometres of beaches, it’s pretty much an entire package of awesomeness, free of charge.
