Going to the opera means you’re a fair dinkum adult, right? And while the thought of sitting inside a stuffy theatre with a bunch of oldies really squashes the allure, what if we told you a mind-blowing production by the best in the biz, Opera Australia, will be popping up on a breezy outdoor stage on the squeaky soft sands of Coolangatta’s foreshore this spring. Sounds captivating, dontcha think?
Held over six dramatic nights, we’re confident Aida, Griffith Opera on the Beach is going to knock your socks off! As darkness falls this September, camels draped in gold-trimmed costumes will be joined by an all-star cast as they tell the story of a royal love triangle and battle for freedom, in Egypt circa 1800s.
Belting out songs composed by the late Verdi, donning extravagant costumes designed by Anna Cordingley and directed by Hugh Halliday, Aida’s key performers include Natalie Aroyan, Michael Honeyman, Milijana Nikolic and Gennadi Dubinsky (if you don’t know these names now, you’ll have the upmost respect afterwards). Together with a 50-piece orchestra, 55-strong chorus featuring local Gold Coast singers and even a handful of our very own surf lifesavers making fun guest appearances. All will be presented on a towering stage creating a wondrous Egyptian-themed setting, with Coolangatta Beach adding to the sensory sand-between-the-toes illusion.
Amplifying the festivities, you can expect fireworks, festoon lights galore, pop up bars (a freakin’ beach bar, you guys!), plus African and Middle Eastern-inspired eats like tagine, sumac roasted chicken and Moroccan tarts.
Many of you might remember a similar outdoor theatre travelled through a few years back. But now, more than ever, getting cultured is officially cool and given productions of this grandeur and calibre don’t come a-knocking every day, we think you’d be a fool to miss it. Tickets are now on sale starting at $35 for adults (up to $90 for premium reserve) so, gather your besties, pick out a frock and prepare for a magical, goose bump-inducing night under the stars.
