Nothing quite defines our laid-back lifestyle in ‘Straya like a solid session of day-drinking in the sunshine, surrounded by mates, and toasting farewell to another week in paradise.
To help you in this endeavour, we’ve rounded up our pick of the best Sunday sessions on the Gold Coast. Drinking shoes at the ready…
Balter Brewing HQ
Remember the good ol’ days of Fishos? Or not. For those among us who do, you’ll agree Sundays on the Gold Coast will never be the same again thanks to the arrival of illustrious Balter Brewery. One of our fave spots to say farewell to the weekend among a cool crew, rocking tunes on the surround sound, eats by some of the best food trucks in town, and access to Balter’s full line-up including exclusive test brews with the likes of their In Rainbows IPA and Black Metal Disco sweet stout. An arvo at Balter HQ is without question one of the best Sunday sessions on the Gold Coast ‘cause nothing tops a direct-from-the-source brew served by the legends themselves: Fanning, Parko, Bede… cheers, boys!
Where: 14 Traders Way, Currumbin
Komune Beach Club
While we, personally, are too old to be hanging at Komune these days, it can’t be beat for a Sunday session that feels more like a party at your mate’s epic beach house (you can only dream right?). Get wet with pool volleyball fun, lounge in stripy bean bag chairs, fist pump to DJ tunes, and embrace an afternoon that’ll likely end with getting busy on the dance floor. Because the weekend doesn’t end until midnight.
Where: 16 Marine Parade, Coolangatta
Tupe Aloha Bar and Grill
Good-vibes tiki bar and grill, Tupe Aloha on Kirra’s main drag is the kind of establishment that’ll instantly boost your mood. Sundays at Tupes are legendary among southern circles, with an always-holiday vibe that’ll leave you skipping into Monday. Between 3pm and 5pm, the animated crew will keep you well lubricated with happy hour drinks ($3 pots of Coopers, $5 basic spirits and house wine) plus $3 taco specials, and everything else we love about Mexican food. That’s our kind of Sunday arvo well spent!
Where: Shop 1, Corner Douglas and Musgrave Streets, Kirra
Garden Kitchen and Bar
For one of the best Sunday sessions on the Gold Coast, head to the refined digs of the lusciously leafy Garden Kitchen and Bar. “Sundays in the Garden” are the perfect setting for that cute new outfit purchase, where you can shimmy around the spacious deck, outdoor bar and grassy lawn, with a rotating roster of local musos serenading between 2pm—6pm.
Where: Jupiters Hotel and Casino, Broadbeach Island
Iron and Resin
A Sunday session of the morning variety, Iron and Resin’s “Any Given Sunday” kicks off with live acoustics from 9am, food truck eats, piping coffee, and sexy motorbikes galore to lust after. What’s best, starting early means you can squeeze two socialising sessions into one day. #winning
Where: 6 Stewart Road, Currumbin
Our friends at MexiCali know the meaning of a solid Sunday session. Pop down to Nobbys from 2:30pm on a lazy arvo for live music or DJs, an epic three-hour long happy hour ($10 margs, $5 Coronas and Tecate cans, $15 sangria jugs), Mexican bites, and banter with your pals. Don’t miss their new cucumber jalapeno margaritas and enjoy the late afternoon sunshine from MexiCali’s western-facing deck. Around Nobbys this weekend? This is one of the best Sunday sessions on the Gold Coast, fo’ sure.
Where: Level 1/2223 Gold Coast Highway, Nobby Beach
Northerners beeline for Café Catalina on Sundays. We can hardly blame them with those smashing Broadwater views, backed by glistening ripples of the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre. Live acoustics featuring a rotating roster of both established and up-and-coming local musicians kicks off at 3pm, so pull up a bean bag on the Astro turf and bring your four-legged friend.
Where: 10/11 Broadwater Parklands, Southport
Justin Lane Rooftop
Dust off your weekend best, ‘cause double pluggers and sandy boardies simply won’t cut it at Burleigh’s favourite Sunday session venue—Justin Lane’s sexy rooftop. With DJs spinning from 2pm ‘til late every Sunday, head in for sourdough pizzas and epic cocktails. Your Sunday arvo never looked so fine.
Where: 1708 – 1710 Gold Coast Highway, Burleigh Heads
Cabana Bar and Lounge
With super refreshing jugs of shared cocktails and tapas platters for small groups, Cabana Bar and Lounge is a sweet spot for northern Gold Coasters to wind down after a hectic weekend. Seeing out the remainder of winter are “Sundays in Sicily” with live acoustics from 1pm and a tapas menu that includes Spicy Italian or Margherita pizzas.
Where: Southport Sharks, Corner Musgrave and Olsen Avenues, Southport
Burleigh Brewing HQ
What’s better than a frosty brew on a Sunday? How about one direct from the source where the liquid gold has travelled a few short metres from tank, to tap, to your pint glass. Burleigh Brewing helped craft the local beer scene to what we know and love today, and for that they are totally deserving of your patronage. Their aptly named Sunday “Crafternoons” sesh (2pm—6pm) is complete with live music, regular brewery tours, and food trucks. Kids in tow? This joint is fenced, so you can let the ankle biters run free while you quaff a five-way sampler.
Where: 2 Ern Harley Drive, Burleigh
Bine Craft Beer Bar
If you can’t bare to commit to just one GC-brewed boutique beer, Bine Craft Beer Bar often taps the whole local line-up. Come Sunday arvos this place is buzzing, particularly when those late afternoon rays cast a golden glow in through Bine’s western-facing windows. If you’re the kind to sacrifice a booze buzz for a good feed, Bine fries up one mad fine chicken parmy, paired perfectly with a tasting paddle. While next door, Nobbys Arc adds to the Sunday drinking vibes.
Where: 1/28 Chairlift Avenue, Nobby Beach
Currumbin Beach Vikings
Life doesn’t get more quintessential Queensland than a sunny Sunday sesh at the local surf club. Much-loved Currumbin Beach Vikings Surf Club not only boasts the most primo beachside position of any joint dishing up food and bevvies on the Coast, but they also throw on a banging good session every Sunday arvo. It might just help you from being dragged kicking and screaming into the working week. Surf on in for live music from 4pm and drink specials. Those epic views are complimentary.
Where: 741 Pacific Parade, Currumbin
Sometimes you’ve just got to take things into your own hands when few establishments offer the absolute beach frontage we’ve come to love on the GC or your bank account simply can’t handle dropping another greenback on a round of cocktails and burgers at Ze Pickle (we still bloody love that place, though). One of our fave ways to wind down after a hectic week is to grab a picnic throw, raid the fridge for a throw-together nibbles platter, swing past Uncle Dan’s for a six-pack of coldies or vino, gather the besties, and set up camp on Burleigh Hill. Where would you rather be to squeeze those last precious drops out of the weekend?
