There’s so much action happening on the Coast this weekend, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
No plans? That’s about to change with this wee round up of things to do on the Gold Coast this weekend.
National U23 Beach Volleyball Champs | All Weekend
If the thought of pitching a sun umbrella and watching toned, tanned bodies setting, spiking, and diving in the sand sounds like your idea of a good time (us, too!), you’ll wanna make tracks for Coolangatta this weekend. Sixty-four men’s and women’s teams (under 23s) from across Australia, New Zealand, and as far as Vanuatu are headed our way to compete at an elite level. Basically this will be a tiny taste of the action the stunning southern GC can expect, when the world lands on their doorstep for the Comm Games in just over 12 months time.
Where: Coolangatta Beach opposite The Strand, Coolangatta
IRON ZUU Launch Day | Saturday, January 21
If you’ve never quite grown the balls to channel your inner warrior and try out the international fitness movement ZUU, which started right here on the Gold Coast, now’s your chance. Founder Nathan Helberg has returned to his Burleigh Heads HQ for the world-first launch of IRON ZUU; the evolution of his hit program sees the introduction of weights. You’re invited to join a free 15-minute taster with Nathan, between 6am and 1pm this Saturday (pre-registration required). Earlier this week, we sent our courageous writer Dani Byrnes to sweat it out with founder Nathan and his team; Dani dishes up the beef on site this Sunday.
Where: 2/63 Township Drive, Burleigh Heads
The Street Food Cove | Saturday, January 21
Another new event added to GC Design Collective Markets’ fast-growing itinerary is The Street Food Cove. Those locals in their 30s should have fond (albeit fuzzy) memories of the glory days of Fishos, and this market newbie hopes to reignite some of the magic of Fisherman’s Wharf and its bar (open ‘til late). Popping up between 3pm and 9pm at Mariners Cove, adjacent to Marina Mirage, a convoy of food trucks and stalls, clothing and craft markets, and live musos are all headed for Main Beach, and we suggest you follow them!
Where: Mariner’s Cove, Sea World Drive, Main Beach
The Social Markets | Saturday, January 21
The Social Markets, Gold Coast’s newest permanent (bi-monthly) night market, is back for another Saturday night filled with family-friendly good times. Between 4pm and 9pm you can partake in free barefoot bowls, scour the crafty market stalls, and feed your face with street food vendors and trucks. The team want you to know this Saturday is gonna be a little bit spesh, with Triple J Unearthed artist and local lad Dan Irwin picking up his guitar as well as Jacksons James Smith adding to the merry making. So grab a mojito and a deck chair from the back bar as the sun sets, and cross your fingers for a clear night!
Where: Mermaid Beach Bowls Club, 2408-2430 Gold Coast Highway, Mermaid Beach
Brunch like a boss | All Weekend
If events don’t take your fancy, there’s one thing we can never, ever get enough of, and that’s eating our way across the Gold Coast. There’s been a swagger of new openings in recent months, and we bet you haven’t visited them all—nuh uh! Devour the best bao on the Coast at Lucky Bao’s new permanent home in Mermaid Waters, feed your soul with lovingly-crafted vegetarian eats at Tweed Head’s SOZO Square, check out Burleigh’s new Lebanese eatery, Rabbath or perhaps Meraki Kitchen in Chirn Park or Finger and Bones cafe in Mermaid. And don’t wait too long to see what magic has been unleashed at Blackboard 3.0 in Varsity. Happy eating!
