What’s better than a long weekend? How about a sexy new bar opening just in time for the long weekend? Yasss, we thought you’d like that!
It’s no secret some locals choose to avoid Surfers like the plague, and when you don’t want to trip quite as far as Broadbeach, then Nobby Beach is often the hub of choice for a tipple or two. So Nobbys’ regulars will be stoked to learn that the nightlife options have just expanded.
May we introduce, The Maven.
Think moody lighting, draping ivy behind the bar, New York-inspired cocktails, stiff whiskey drinks (the owner is a connoisseur), and a sultry stay-a-while soundtrack of 50s Swing House (aka swing music with a funky house beat). But we know the first thing to capture your attention will be the bar’s intriguing focal point: a 2,300+ custom-designed, parametric wall of wine bottles. Intrigued? You should be.
Now we see you scratching your head wondering where the vacant space appeared from for said new bar. Truth is, it already was a bar, but perhaps the unfortunate name (um, dad joke?) kept you away from slipping in to check out what was on offer inside such a valuable location.
Good news is, with some knowledgeable GC-scene guidance from the savvy ladies at Social Society and with the crafty touch of Studio Workshop (who also had a hand in the fit-out of Nord Coffee and Little Mermaid), winers and diners can expect a totally new spin and vibe.
Yesterday, prior to the launch party, Metropolist had a sneaky peek and food sampling where we tucked into delish tapas share plates with the likes of chilli poppers, Sicilian olives stuffed with feta then panko-crumbed and fried, house-baked bread melted through with camembert (drool!), charcuterie platters, sticky pork ribs, and our fave, the char grilled lamb cutlets rubbed with chermouli and dipped in yoghurt. We can already see the bar will fulfil a sweet spot for that Friday post-work download over a glass of vino or three.
The Maven’s cocktail list features some curiosities we’ve not seen attempted previously, including the Maveness, an Instagram-worthy champagne-style cocktail with Prosecco poured over icy poles of strawberry and lemon grass or blueberry and peach. Neat, huh? Or, gin lovers will appreciate the stiff Ink and Tonic—tinted blue by the “ink” gin, infused with rosemary, and served over crushed ice.
But enough from us, whack it on your long weekend to-do list. ‘Cause The Maven appears to be well and truly free of dad jokes now, so it’s a safe call this sleek tapas, wine, and whiskey bar could be on its way to finally fitting in with the hip scene that is Nobby Beach.
You’ll find The Maven open Thursdays to Sundays from 5pm ‘til late, with the exception of Fridays when it opens for lunch at 12 noon.
