If you’re less about walking in a winter wonderland and more for drinking in a toasty snuggie by the fire, we’ve got you.
While most people say we don’t really know what a real winter is here on the Coast, we feel it’s necessary to lap up every winter-themed novelty in full force.
Here are all the best spots to have a wine by a fireplace in and around the Gold Coast.
Fox and Hounds
When we think of cosying up by a fireplace, we daydream of serious Peter Rabbit vibes with perfectly manicured lawns, white picket fences and old London Manors. Well, that’s exactly what you’ll get at Fox and Hounds, and then some. Nestled into Wongawallan’s lush hinterland landscape, this authentic English Pub was literally transported from England (the only one of its kind in Australia!) Treat yourself to British Ales, local beers and traditional English eats—think Yorkshire pudding and Guinness pie. Come night time, the fireplace roars, transforming this Country Inn into a snug wine-sipping hideaway.
Road trips for wine always end in a good time. But perhaps the dreamiest destination at the bottom of the glass is Potager. As a self-confessed garden-kitchen, this multi-award-winning weekender-turned-eating hub is hands-down the quaintest, most adorable place to enjoy a wine by a fireplace near the Gold Coast. By day it’s a rustic long-lunching destination. Come night time, the ambience reaches new heights. Pop by Friday to Sunday to experience a whole new definition of brilliance.
Verandah Restaurant And Bar
Planning a date, night out or indulgent wintery session comes with its own set of questions. Will the food be good? Can my cocktails come in cut crystal glasses, please? And perhaps the most important question of all, will there be a grand fireplace? Luckily for you, at Sanctuary Cove’s swanky Verandah Restaurant and Bar, every box is ticked. Pass around share plates and sip on seriously spectacular cocktails (coming from those who’ve sipped a lot). All in front of a blazing fire, crackling before your eyes. Sometimes size does matter. And this is the biggest fireplace we’ve seen on the Gold Coast. Beware: with 50 whiskeys to choose from, you could be here ‘til the wee hours.
Downton Abbey, eat your heart out. Fitted with nothing but the most pristine vintage furniture, long grazing tables and shiny crockery, you’ll just adore Vue 175. Then step outside for a completely different, luxe resort feel. Harbouring expansive views of the Gold Coast from the hinterland, a pristine pool and alfresco lounging areas, we could move right in. Watch the glowing embers of Vue’s homely fireplace and taste your way around their immaculate menu using only the freshest locally sourced produce. All with a wine in hand, of course.
Sure, you’ve seen a whole lot of fudge on your Sunday trips around Tambourine Mountain. But you haven’t seen anything quite like St Bernards Hotel. Overlooking the Guanaba Gorge, get all swept up in this traditional pub’s worldly feel. Catch rays from the terrace deck or opt to cuddle up by the fire. St Bernards Hotel has been many things. A Post Office, a licensed property and a private hotel. But our favourite version is the one you can visit today—after moving to Mount Tamborine back in 1898, we don’t see ol’ Berny going anywhere any time soon. Nor the giant pooch who welcomes you on entry.
A little left of field, filled to the brim with quirky memorabilia and home to one of Gold Coast’s only open fireplaces. D’Arcy Arms ticks a lot of boxes for us. As you can expect, it’s as Irish as heck, and we’re all for it. Best of all, after you’ve nursed your red and warmed your caboose by the flames, rooms are up for grabs to stay the night. After all, it would only be fair for you and your beef and Guinness stew food baby.
The Lake Brewhouse
Yes, there really is a lake in Varsity Lakes. And yes, you can down a couple of burgs while overlooking it. Okay, we’re sold already. But Varsity’s own microbrewery also offers craft beer brewed on-site, happy hour all day Thursday and live music acts on the regular. Plus, a stone set fireplace for serious lake house vibes. Get down to The Lake Brewhouse for a warm up and a wine.
