What can’t the Mexicans do? They gave us guacamole, margaritas, oozy cheese-filled enchiladas and sombreros. This Friday is Cinco de Mayo and Sydney is celebrating all things mexcellent! What better way to start the weekend with a burrito in one hand and tequila shot in the other.
El Camino Cantina
Gather your hombre’s, El Camino Cantina is celebrating Cinco de Mayo in true Mexican style. Feast your hands around $5 tacos, accompanied by $5 margaritas, craft beers and house wines until 7pm (pres=sorted). The beloved Tex-Mex hangout is also upgrading their margarita for the occasion, with a boost of peach and habanero chilli in honour of Cinco de Mayo. Tip: get your fake moustaches and poncho’s ready, as these guys are giving prizes away for the best dressed.
CBD & Miranda
For any Mexican fiend, Mejico is of the top destinations for authentic and fresh flavours in Sydney. Which is why Cinco de Mayo celebrations here are getting the nod of approval. Of course, they’re usuals are a given—like house made guacamole with plantain chips and jalapeno poppers (roasted jalapenos, crumbed and stuffed with feta and served with chipotle mayo), but you won’t want to miss the ‘feed me’ option, which is perfect for those of us (you know who you are) who are indecisive and have heart palpitations when it’s your turn to order. Also, an exclusive $15 cocktail special is happening, try The cherry tequila sour with Olmeca Altos Blanco, lemon juice, egg white and a maraschino cherry.
El Loco at Slip Inn & Excelsior
Surry Hills & CBD
El Loco is heating up Cinco De Mayo festivities at both of their venues. Offering $5 taquitos, mariachi music and $10 watermelon margaritas, you’ll be saying ole´ in no time! Vinyl DJ’s will be playing at Excelsior and helping you get into the groove with happy hour from 6-8pm, and the Slip Inn is helping our alcohol consumption with $15 grand margaritas available all day. Let’s Avaca-go!
In a one-off collaboration, Barrio Cellar is joining forces with renowned Mexican Chef Cindy Flores to create a night you won’t forget. Paying ultimate homage to Cinco De Mayo, Chef Flores, the brains behind the worldwide Guzman y Gomez franchise, has prepared a menu inspired by her Mexican heritage and travels. A tequila and cocktail tasting menu will also be available, as well as an ice sculpture that acts as a receiver for the Barrio Tommy’s margarita. With drinks and music flowing, get in quick as there are only 100 tickets!
Darlo Country Club
Let’s Guac and Roll! The Dine & Dance is back for a Cinco de Mayo edition. Special guest chefs are leading the night, cooking up dishes such as lamb barbacoa tacos and scallop aguachile. Mexican-inspired cocktails are a given, with a Barrio margarita served to guests upon arrival. But it doesn’t stop there. From 8:30 onwards DJ’s will be making sure the festivities continue. Salud!
SoCal is a colourful and vibrant little spot serving up some of the most delicious Mexican in Neutral Bay. So it seems fitting that they are hosting their own Cinco de Mayo soiree. From 5pm they’ll be providing $15 classic or Tommy’s margaritas and a heap of food and drink specials. Original menu options will also be available, like their SoCal beef & cheese popper slider with south-west sauce. The Fresh Prince of Hell Yeah—their agave cocktail—is also highly recommended.
El Topo is mixing things up with their Mezcal masterclass for Cinco de Mayo. Greeted with a mezcal margarita on arrival, you’ll be exploring four different Bruxo brands throughout the night. To assist your tasting, you’ll be offered a range of Mexican foods, including a soft-shell crab taco and lamb shoulder. But what we’re most excited about is the Mexican doughnuts. Doughnut judge until you try!
Beach Burrito certainly knows how to host a party. Their Mexican fiesta will offer some great goodies and giveaways for best dressed, with prizes like Jose Cuervo tequila and Pistonhead Kustom lager on offer. Beach Burrito’s famous tequila muffins, flash fried and soaked in 1800 coconut tequila, are also making a comeback. The poncho is a good outfit op. Not because it suits the theme, but because it won’t restrict your food consumption.
Good things apparently come in five at The Norfolk. These Señores & Señoritas are giving away $5 Coronas, Tectates tinnies and batangas as well as five special taco and margarita flavours to choose from. Have a whack at the piñata (think of your ex or the week you’ve just had) and dance into the night with high spirits (pun intended).
