Vamos amigos, this weekend is Cinco de Mayo which means 48-hours of tacos, tequila and celebratory antics. More traditionally, this date is for commemorating the Mexican Army’s victory over the French Empire, but over the years Cinco de Mayo is a day for getting into all things Mexican. You know, like going hard on buckets of guac, wearing sombreros and maxing out on burritos.
As such, there’s a sling of epic venues getting into the Mexican fiesta so here’s where to celebrate Cinco de Mayo in Sydney.
El Camino Cantina
The Rocks & Manly
One of our favourite Mexican establishments, El Camino Cantina is hosting a major fiesta. With live DJ entertainment while you snack on bottomless baskets of chips and salsa, prepare yourselves for the chilli eating competition that’s happening at 7pm. You can also take a swing at their piñata for the chance to win drink tokens and restaurant merch. To top it all off, they’ve got a special margarita being rolled out, the Bloody May Rita, mixed with Jose de Cuervo, triple sec, lemon, tomato juice, Worchester sauce, tabasco sauce and agave syrup.
When: Sunday 5 May, 6pm
Bar Patrón is hosting a long lunch for you to nurse that hangover Saturday night hangover. Grab a jalapeno margaritas upon arrival and sit down to a share-style lunch filled with traditional Mexican dishes. Hit up the fried fish tacos with hand-pounded guacamole or grilled skirt steak with red rice, refried beans and cheese. But you’ll need to leave room for their delectable dessert of Mexican-spiced chocolate mousse. Head here to book for $99 per person.
When: Sunday 5 May, 12pm-2pm
Head into The Glenmore’s rooftop bar to celebrate Cinco de Mayo this weekend. Round up your amigos because for only $25 you can get a margarita jug to share and get crazy. With live music, giveaways and $16 for four tacos, you can bet we’re going to cosy up to this bar.
When: Sunday 5 May, 11am
Although the Nighthawk Diner is closed on Sundays, they’re doing us an absolute solid by offering up a taco/cocktail special to make it up to us. For only $15, order up a Baja mahi mahi fish taco with coriander slaw, guajillo tequila salsa and fresh jalapenos with a grapefruit Paloma cocktail to celebrate this holiday.
When: Tuesday 30 April through to Saturday 4 May
Manly Wharf Hotel
For a sea-side Cinco de Mayo party like no other, hit up the Manly Wharf Hotel. Down some mini patron margaritas for $12 a pop while you dance to DJs Brad Mullens and Dollar Cub. But that’s not the best part. The legends at Manly Wharf Hotel are bringing us a feast for only $20. Think crispy skin chicken tacos, tempura fish and nachos served with beef, guacamole, sour cream and of course corn chips.
When: Saturday 4 May, 12pm
We love the sound of all-you-can-eat tacos, but mix that with bottomless margaritas and we’ll go nuts. The Norfolk has not one, but two all-you-can-eat sessions this Sunday and while you munch your tacos (vego and vegan options available) and down your margaritas, kick on to the vibe of the live Mariachi band. At 1:30pm, a taco eating competition is also being held so to sign up, you’ll have to head here.
When: Sunday 5 May, 12pm & 2pm
The Governor Hotel
Head straight up to the rooftop of The Governor Hotel for bottomless tacos and margaritas. Choose your day for a three-hour session at $75 per person. On the menu, you’ve got beef brisket, Cajun chicken, spicy fish and vegetarian and don’t forget those classic no-frills margaritas.
When: Friday 3 May, 4pm-7pm, Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May, 1pm-4pm
Coogee Bay Hotel
Check into the Coogee Bay Hotel for a weekend-long Mexican celebration. Head into The Garden to view the latest transformation into a fiesta filled with dancers, a photo-booth and even a live Mariachi band. The food ain’t too shabby either, with all the fixings for a feast, order up your nachos and tacos and down with a Lexington Hill Margarita (or three).
When: Saturday 4 to Sunday 5 May, 12pm-7pm
Barrio Cellar is bringing us an all-night party with $15 cocktails and $3 tacos from Friday to Saturday. Creating a Latin Caribbean themed Melao Party these folks are staying up until dawn in true fiesta style.
When: Friday 3 to Saturday 4 May, 6pm-3am
Sydney’s first Cinco de Mayo food festival is hitting The Rocks this weekend and live street art, taco eating competitions, Latin American bands and Lucha Libra wrestling are all on the docket. In case you’re getting peckish, Sydney’s best South American hot spots, SoCal, Panama House and Chula will be selling off some delicious Mexican favourites all night. Register for your tickets here.
