What's On

This Weekend In Sydney

By Milly Ellen - 24 Jul 2014

You're probably getting a little bit jealous of all the people plastering Facebook and Instagram with their smiley holiday snaps from warmer climes. To combat the FOMO and find a mini getaway from the work week, we've collated the best of Sydney's go-to events to take the edge off not sunbathing in Barbados. Find some magnificent new jeans or discover your hip hop potential, whatever floats your boat, there's something for you!

Here's what's on this weekend in Sydney:

Thursday 24th

Chronicles of Never & Black Noise White Rain Sample Sale

Need to grab some jazzy new jeans or a snappy blazer to help you get through the last bitter weeks of winter but don't want to sob at your dwindling bank balance? Chronicles of Never and Black Noise White Rain can help you out, with up to 75% off lads and ladies threads on Foster Street, Surry Hills. Guilt-free style hunting at its best.

Films for Change 'The Crash Reel'

With a simple ethos of 'good films, good food, good conversation', Films For Change can guarantee an eye-opening night of new ideas and interesting stories from around the world. Head along to Govindas Restaurant and Movie Room to watch extreme snowboarder Kevin Pearce's heart-wrenching battle to recover from a severe head trauma whilst questioning the price of sporting success.

Friday 25th

Jazz Hip-Hop Freestyle Sessions

If you're on a lengthy pub crawl this Friday, be sure to stumble into Foundry 616 to check out the crazy talent at their Jazz Hip-Hop Freestyle Sessions. For a fiver, you can stay toasty until the wee hours with some cold beer and lyrical magic. Burgeoning feelings of inadequacy are inevitable but all are welcome, and you might even pick up some 'mad skillz'.

Thank God It's Freda's

The weekly soirees continue at Freda's in Chippendale with DJ maestros Pelvis gracing their decks and bringing some '80s house/electro jazz to the rustic little bar with a drinks list to make your head spin. Bring a group and groove along to the guys bringing back vinyl and disco while sipping your apple, kale and ginger daiquiri and inhaling the contents of your sandwich from the Burger Chou Bau menu. You won't leave this place hungry or sober and you'll probably be dancing the whole way home!

Saturday 26th

Round She Goes Preloved Fashion Market

Bored and wondering what's on and what to do with yourself in Sydney this weekend? With over 60 stalls dedicated to quality vintage fashion, it would be physically impossible to leave the market without some new additions to your winter wardrobe. Marrickville Town Hall will transform into an absolute haven of kitschy cool filled with nostalgia, paisley and pastels. It's $2 for entry, and a small price to pay for the biggest and best collection of vintage in Australia. One tip though? Set a budget. This place will make you forget that money exists and that you can't have every fabulous thing you see. Tragic, but true.

Sunday 27th

One Day Sundays at the Vic

An unconditional favourite for the regulars in Enmore, The Vic has opened its doors on Sundays for party people who haven't stopped dancing since the previous night. From 1pm, Adit and Raph will be hitting the decks and prepping pub dwellers for notable kiwi DJ P-Money and his brand of hip hop sampling. Wash away the hangover with more beer and have a lazy afternoon before the horrors of the work week begin anew!

The Royal Markets

For those who want a bit of everything to top off the weekend, The Royal Markets can cater for your demands. From 11-4pm, the interior of the Royal Albert Hotel in Surry Hills will showcase the best from designers like Winifred & Delilah, Laurel and Hector and Mojo Records will be open for browsing whilst craft beer and hot dogs at the bar will keep the shopping stamina alive. And really, who doesn't love drunk shopping?
