From Thursday morning to Sunday night, we've got a jam-packed weekend planned that involves no TV marathons, sleep-ins, or boring stuff. Grab a scarf and brave the winter chills to catch an art exhibition, support a local charity, or drink up to drown out work worries and winter woes!
Here are our picks for things to do in Sydney this weekend.
Xmas in July Dinner at the Newtown Hotel
Who wants to wait around 'til December to induce severe stomach cramping as a result of consuming enough crackling to decimate the pig population of Australia? NO ONE. That's why The Animal at Newtown Hotel has decided to hold Christmas a little early and give you a banquet of epic proportions for just $40pp. Because, you know, we totally deserve two Christmases.
The Beer Pilgrim
This Friday is the most important day of 2014. Records will be broken, hangovers will be suffered through and brews will be chugged. Yes, it's International Beer Day. And the folks at Ivy are making it even better by asking fellow beer devotees to break the Guinness (ha!) World Record for the largest beer tasting at a single venue. Make the history books then get some brews and complimentary canapés to go with your victory lap when the deed is done.
Apres Ski at Zeta Bar
For those who are contracting serious bouts of snow envy, the cocktail gods at Zeta Bar have introduced the Apres Ski experience to recreate the best part of skiing/boarding right here in Sydney. Without the bruises and frostbitten nose to compliment, you can grab a Toasted Marshmallow Gin Fizz or The Nordic Martini and laugh disdainfully at the poor souls braving blizzards and toboganners for their fix of winter. Head to Sydney Hilton and get a nitrogen-cooled cup of joy.
To all the sorry people in the universe who have been silently judged for reaching for that third pastry, this market was created for you. Brisbane St in Surry Hills will be a cornucopia of shared understanding and bread love with Brewtown Newtown, Brickfields, and Blackstar (among others) providing the goods for the day. It's brand new, and destined to be packed, so get in quick before everything is snapped up! And be sure to skip breakfast.
In a restored 1890s fire station, sits the Artereal Gallery and its ode to our consumer-driven, capitalistic desire to accumulate and propagate an image of ourselves that is perhaps somewhat removed from reality. On the last day of this exhibition, #FOMO will display the latest and greatest work from emerging artists Liam Benson, Tully Arnot, Louise Zhang, and Criena Court, and highlight our insatiable desire to possess art, items, and experiences. It's wacky, wonderful and free!
Sydney Vegan Expo 2014
The Vegan Society of NSW is bringing consciousness to the table with a host of speakers, workshops and performances from fellow animal lovers with a view to creating awareness about sustainable dietary choices. The Sydney Vegan Expo will be both an open exhibition for those who have already taken the plunge into veganism and an information session for those who are thinking about switching to a more animal friendly lifestyle. If you're looking for things to do in Sydney this weekend, head along to Petersham Town Hall to find out more!
Add a spot of colour, glitter, and pizazz to your weekend with a stop at Riley Street, Surry Hills to check out the Wonder 102 markets. Proceeds of the day will go to The Girls & Boys Brigade, which provides a safe space for inner-west kids to play, learn, and grow with the help of some dedicated volunteers. Get your crafty kicks on with PVC masters, Candy Sparkles and Kids In Philanthropy and check out the goods on offer from Vanishing Elephant, Elke Jewelry, and Dinosaur Designs (among others!).
