Our New Favourite Italian Restaurant In The CBD

By Anna May - 17 Nov 2014

Behold, Listers! Our new favourite restaurant in Sydney has been under our noses the whole time – we've discovered one of the best Italian restaurants in the CBD, and we're going to share it with you.

Be prepared for a pleasant surprise, because Janus Italian in Westfield Pitt Street is as beautiful as it is delicious. Light streams in through the high windows and brightens up the already-welcoming space. In the middle sits a tree adorned with fairy lights that makes us feel as if there's something magical about the place.

Janus Italian makes all of its own ingredients where possible; the pizza is crafted from homemade dough that is left to rest for three days so it is perfect by the time it makes its way from the oven to your lips. The pasta is also hand-rolled daily, so you know you're not getting any of that stale packet stuff, just incredibly fresh, bouncy pasta; and we really could tell the difference. The cocktail list is solid, with plenty of classic and Italian cocktails on offer, as well as a strong wine list for whatever occasion you're after.

It would have been rude not to partake in at least one pasta, and the prawn and calamari linguini was calling our name as soon as we opened the menu. The sauce clung to the super fresh pasta without weighing it down, and was loaded with fat, juicy prawns, perfectly cooked calamari and a balanced blend of garlic, chilli, lemon and rocket. It's safe to say this pasta quickly became one of our go-to lunches in the CBD

Equally delicious was the humble margherita pizza, which some see as boring; but we know that pulling off such a classic is no easy feat, and if you can nail it, well, you're doing great in our books. With a nice helping of sauce, the perfect amount of melty cheese and basil with a good helping of fresh buffalo mozzarella on top, this margherita got a big thumbs up from our end.

Now, if you're a little carb-conscious or are just looking for a quick and healthy lunch in the CBD, Janus' quinoa chicken salad is where it's at. You won't find a boring, dry salad that has you reaching for a cheeseburger at 4pm, but you will find juicy, grilled marinated chicken with a sprinkle of Persian feta, quinoa, cherry tomatoes and spinach with a basil dressing. It's light, refreshing and really hits the spot.

Janus Italian in Westfield know that a hungry CBD worked needs a good feed, and they don't skimp on size or value. You want a burger, starter, salad, steak? It's all there waiting to be discovered and enjoyed.
