Over the past few years, Perth’s health and wellness scene has taken off and we are loving it! From the juice cleanse companies to the healthy cafes, from the wellness warriors to the hip yoga studios sprouting up all over town, Perth has got it going on.

To celebrate all of Perth’s health magic, we’ve created a cool little health and wellness series which will allow you to gain insight into the lives of some of Perth’s healthiest cool cats. They’ll share their tips and tricks and a whole lot of inspiration to help you live the healthiest life ever. Yesss!

This week, we met with Lloyd Johnson, the brains and brawn behind fitness studio Aspire Group in City Beach and Osborne Park. A specialist in athlete conditioning and functional fitness, Lloyd has created an awesome community of like-minded fit-folk at Aspire—and a whole lot of toned bods to boot. We took ten with Lloyd to talk about his business, his top health tips and where he likes to go for dinner.

HEY LLOYD, TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF!

I am a Sports Scientist, ZUU Level 2 and Ankorr Master Trainer and the owner of the Aspire Group. I specialise in athlete conditioning and functional fitness but enjoy working with people regardless of their age or ability.

WHAT SPURRED YOU ON TO START YOUR BUSINESS?

I wanted to create a community where inclusion and encouragement of others was most important. Our trainers promote a “do what you can do” approach to training, constantly encouraging positive affirmations and resilience within our members to safely challenge and get the most out of them at sessions. We find that the physical improvements such as fitness, toning or weight loss achieved become a bi-product of feeling good internally and give our clients a sense of belonging—something many people lose as well as physical drive after school or when they stop participating in organised sports.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN FIT AND HEALTHY?

I have always been active enjoying team and individual sport from a young age. I came from a semi professional rugby background which was my life, but through injury I also experienced this loss of belonging which was extremely tough and lonely at the time, but in hindsight drove me to create Aspire.

WHAT’S A REGULAR DAY LOOK LIKE?

A regular day can kick off at 4:30am with first clients starting at 5am. After the initial sessions I like to take myself over to the beach, chill out by working on some mobility and stretching and then hit the ocean.  From there it’s usually brekkie with someone in our team, or over to the office to do the boring stuff. At lunchtime, I generally have corporate or personal clients and in the afternoon and evening (post nap if I can squeeze it in) I like to get involved in group sessions that we offer such as yoga or ZUU, do my own functional training, play in our touch rugby team or grab dinner with family or the crew!

BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?

The freedom to roster my own work, travel with it and be around some seriously amazing people from all walks of life day in day out.

IF YOU WEREN'T DOING THIS, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING?

I have absolutely no idea, maybe just more travelling! My work pretty much consumes me, but I wouldn’t change it as it’s my hobby and passion too.

FAVOURITE FORM OF EXERCISE?

ZUU and Ankorr training as it physically and mentally challenges me every session. I love the culture that it creates with whichever group we work with, the interaction among people (that may not have known each other at the start of the session) and energy that we get when you’re trying to get others through a session that will essentially challenge and push you in every aspect of your fitness.

YOUR TOP HEALTH TIP?

Be active in as many different ways as possible and try to interact with others when doing so which will keep it interesting. The mental health benefits will become addictive and hopefully part of your daily routine and the physical changes that you often desire will take care of themselves.

BEST PLACE TO GET A HEALTHY TREAT IN PERTH?

I’m a big fan of Hylin in West Leederville—smashed avocado on toast, or Pressed Earth in Claremont for a juice.

WHAT’S NEXT ON THE HORIZON FOR YOU?

We are aiming to open a third facility in 2016 primarily focussed around movement which will cater to kids and adults of all abilities, right through to elite and aspiring athletes. We have our Aspire Kids program that we want to continue implementing into schools across WA as well as a couple of fitness concepts within our functional equipment line that we hope the WA community and council will embrace!
