Street Food Battle, Friday Nite Snackdown Kicks Off This Week!

Kicking off this week in South Brisbane, Friday Nite Snackdown is a new weekly Brisbane event, where food greats go head-to-head in one epic street food battle.

The first Friday Nite Snackdown event will see the delights of Danish street food versus tantalising titbits from Japan. Picture a Viking in wrestling ring, facing off against a Samurai, then transfer these characters into a kitchen and you get some idea of the food fight we’re talking.

A new and ingenious culinary partnership between Wandering Cooks and Ben Devlin, Friday Nite Snackdown will see the snackdown winner decided by guest's votes, tallied up on a blackboard, or patrons can vote by posting photos and social media using the hashtag #snackdown. This week’s winner fight on to the following week to meet a new challenger.

Tokens allow you to purchase bar snacks and drinks, with opening night dishes including takoyaki with squid and katsobushi, yakitori skewers, nikuman, pork belly and cucumber, and plum mocha from the Japanese side; and Ristet hotdog, pickles, onion and remoulade, cured fish smorrebrød, rye bread, sour cream and radish, pork skin crackling, sour cream and watercress, and strawberry æbleskiver, cardamom and cream from the Danish corner.

Open from 4pm-10pm, you’ll need to get in early to grab a table and settle in for the evening. However, if you just want to drop in for a tasty bite, there is plenty of standing space.

Dishes will cost between $4-12 with Stone and Wood beers and weekly selections of wine for $6-8.

Future snackdowns will include cuisines such as Israeli, Peruvian and Polynesian and also look at basing whole menus on a particular animal or seasonal vegetable.

With Ben at the helm, we know it will taste great but snackdown will also feature a range of guest chefs who will also draw on their key inspirations as well as cultural events and random, fun ideas.

And never fear, this doesn’t mean that Ben’s other side project Beerkary Bakery will be slowing down any time soon. They have upcoming events in March for Brewvegas and long term plans for their own venue later this year.

Let’s get ready to rumble!
