Rock climbing is the ultimate full body work out that doesn’t actually feel like exercise. Don’t get it twisted, it’s no walk in the park, in terms of calorie burn it beats your bog-standard gym class any day.

Rock climbing adventures will strengthen and stretch every muscle in your body—and no, there’s no cheating. That includes your arms, fingers, shoulders, core, legs, even your toes. And that’s before we even get to the mental challenge of a climb! It’s the perfect top-to-toe workout for mind and body.

So, go on, break your gym rut; we’ve gathered up the Gold Coast’s best rock climbing spots to really get your blood pumping.

Beginners to serious climbers, this epic West Burleigh venue is for you. Paramount’s indoor rock climbing gym features an awesome 850 square metres of wall space and over 11 metres of vertical height that allows for a huge variety of climbs that are suitable for all levels. Challenge yourself by tackling the pole, overhangs, barrels, angled walls, flake and crack climbs. For the more experienced climbers there’s a dedicated bouldering area, a simulated rock tower with a high level of difficulty and graded climbs with new routes set regularly. The gym is also set up for top roping, with some lead climbing available to experienced climbers. Paramount is open seven days a week with all equipment available for hire on site.

Game Over

For a rock climbing experience that blurs the line with good old-fashioned theme park fun, be sure to check out Game Over’s action-packed climbing adventure precinct. There’s 16 uniquely themed challenges including the death defying Leap of Faith Attraction, Stairway to Heaven and the amazing Twister Tower. Each climb is equipped with automatic belay devices that make climbing safe and exciting for everyone. Sessions start on the half hour and hour and run for 45 minutes (including 15 minutes for safety briefing and harnessing up). If you’re new to this exciting sport or just want to try out something new with your mates, this is the place for you. Did we mention the Game Over centre also has laser tag, go karting and virtual reality? Yep, you’ll want to make a whole day out of it—and you can with the centre open seven days.

Gold Coast Rec Centre

Palm Beach

If you’d rather do away with the bells and whistles and just get down (or up) with a solid climb, head to the GC Rec Centre in Palm Beach and experience The Rock Face. Their indoor walls have over 10 different climbs of varying degrees of difficulty, including crack only climbs and overhangs for the more experienced climbers. They have automatic belay systems too—perfect those doing a solo climb—however the centre’s experienced program staff will also be on hand to help you achieve new heights. Even better, it’s open seven days a week so you can get your climb on stat.

Core Bouldering

While this beauty isn’t officially open yet (it’s slated to be complete in early August) we had to include it because once construction is complete, it will be a gamechanger for climbers on the Coast. The team at Core want to see climbing grow into one of the most popular of Olympic sports and are committed to starting that journey through the explosive and exciting section known as Bouldering. The Core will be the Gold Coast's first and only Bouldering gym with state of the art walls from Walltopia and elite holds. There will also be a kid’s centre and café on site too. Watch this space.
